Los Alamos MainStreet and LACDC’s Business Assistance Services sent out an extensive survey a couple of months ago to assess people’s shopping habits and preferences.
At the monthly Chamber Business Breakfast 7:30-9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, Katie Stavert, business advisor, will give a brief overview of the survey.
The meeting is at UNM-LA, Jeannette Wallace Hall (room 505, building 5) and will look at the survey results with a disccusion on how those are relevant to local businesses.

Border Zone Extension Expected to Boost Tourism, Economy in Southern New Mexico
STATE News:
Santa Fe– Mexican tourists who have a Laser Visa Border Crossing Card can now travel to the Southern New Mexico cities of Las Cruces, Mesilla, Deming and Lordsburg, thanks to the new 55 Mile Rule, which went into effect July 12.
Prior to the new rule, visitors from Mexico could only travel 25 miles into New Mexico, putting these towns off limits.
New Mexico State University’s Arrowhead Center analyzed the economic impact of the new rule and concluded that the state could see up to $51 million in additional spending in the next year, up to 340 new jobs created,and up to $2.57 million Read More

Column: A Novel Economic Development Model
We’ve heard about economic development in Los Alamos many times and, in our opinion, the way it’s presently conceived and practiced, it’s simply counterproductive because it is not compatible with present reality or future predictions for our community, and we badly need another business development program, supported by the community.

The community is invited to attend the official groundbreaking ceremony for Smith’s Marketplace at 2 p.m. Tuesday, on the Trinity Revitalization Site across the street from Mari Mac Plaza.
Members of the Los Alamos County Council may attend the event and a quorum may be present but no council action will be taken.

The magician had to file a “Rabbit Disaster” plan to satisfy an antiquated rule of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
