The Los Alamos County Council recently proclaimed today, Aug. 17, 2024 National Nonprofit Day in Los Alamos. Los Alamos Community Foundation (LACF) President Pat Soran was honored to accept the proclamation on behalf of Los Alamos nonprofit organizations.
“Our community is filled with people who are passionate about helping each other, making our community more vibrant, and celebrating what makes Los Alamos special,” Soran said. “It is important that we recognize their efforts, and to celebrate and acknowledge the staff and volunteers that make our nonprofits successful.“
LACF Executive Director Liz Martineau there are more than 150 Nonprofit organizations enriching the Los Alamos community by providing nursing care, food security, counseling, art and music programs, history preservation, and so much more.
“National Nonprofit Day celebrates the positive impacts that these organizations have on our community,” Martineau said. “We encourage people to use this as an opportunity to show their appreciation to nonprofits of their choice.”
Appreciation means that you take action to support an organization. There are so many different actions that individuals, children, families or groups may take to help an organization.
Below are 10 appreciation ideas. Choose a local nonprofit organization and take action today:
1. Wear a shirt that represents a nonprofit organization.
2. Link your Smith’s card to a nonprofit organization.
3. Volunteer! Browse volunteer opportunities at VolunteerLosAlamos.org.
4. Share a social media post/photo about your favorite nonprofit.
5. Create a social media post telling which organization you are adopting and why, or share the action that you are taking to support an organization.
6. Invite a friend to join you at an event sponsored by a nonprofit organization (PEEC program, Historical Society lecture, Family Council movie, etc.).
7. Write a thank you note to a nonprofit organization. Never underestimate the power of gratitude. (You could add a treat for the hardworking staff, too!)
8. Make a monetary donation. Browse local organizations at LosalamosGives.org.
9. Create sustainability for an organization by choosing one nonprofit to support monthly for a year.
10. Add to (or start) an endowment fund at LACF, losalamoscf.org.
