COVID-19 community newsletter issued Tuesday:
Los Alamos County issued the COVID-19 Community Newsletter Tuesday, Oct. 17. Inside the newsletter from William F. Athas’ Epidemiology Corner, the CDC revised its variant profile to show that newly tracked Omicron variants BQ.1, BQ.1.1, BA.2.75.2 are quickly gaining ground in the US and outcompeting the predominant BA.5. And while the CDC Community Level for Los Alamos County remains LOW, virus levels roughly doubled in the county’s wastewater as of the end of September, and health authorities believe that there is the potential for another COVID-19 wave going into the Fall/Winter.

Board Game and TTRPG nights at Samizdat!
Samizdat Bookstore and Teahouse is holding game nights! Hosts Jose Ortega and Alister Stewart guide new and veteran players through a series of board games and independent tabletop role playing games.
Ortega has run rollicking sessions of Zombicide and is now running Halloween-themed sessions of Betrayal at House on the Hill and Betrayal at Baldur’s Gate, perfect for a spooky night with friends.
Stewart is guiding players through Babes in the Wood, where gamers play as kids, sentient toys, or animals who explore their hometown woods on Halloween night, encountering magical forest folk all while something darker lurks just out of sight.
This TTRPG is based on the Powered by the Apocalypse system, and is a beginner-friendly introduction to this system which will be used in future games such as Thirsty Sword Lesbians and Sleepaway. Jose and Stewart work to make an inclusive and welcoming environment for all players, regardless of skill level or experience.

JJAB Presents: LGBTQ+ Deep Dive
5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Fuller Lodge Arts Center.
Five folks from the local queer community have volunteered to each prepare a 3-minute presentation on a topic related to their experience and queer realities. Participants will rotate between each presenter (who will be situated in various studios at the Art Center) and, following each short presentation, will enjoy a few additional minutes of dialogue and inquiry about the topic discussed–before moving on to the next presentation. This is a free event, and refreshments will be provided.

Use the Trinity entrance to get to LAMC’s back lot, where RN’s and medical assistants will be ready to answer any questions and distribute flu shots upon your arrival.
Please consider the following:
- You must be 18 years of age to receive the flu shot
- Ages 65+ can get this shot, the higher dose is preferred for that age group
- Short sleeves are preferred, so you are ready to receive the dose as you pull up
- 4 people per vehicle

LACF to Host Free Seminar Oct. 27 on Financial and Tax Planning for Giving

The session, titled “Planning for Giving – Tips for Current and Future Donors” is part of LACF’s annual Community Philanthropy Series and will be held 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at the UNM-LA Student Center Lecture Hall (Building 2). The event will include valuable information on ways to plan for charitable giving that could save on your taxes and increase the impact of the amount you give.

Mesa Public Library presents Four Shillings Short in concert 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 at Fuller Lodge! Enjoy music, stories, and folklore to celebrate the Celtic bonfire festival of Samhain. Rooted in Celtic and American folk music, this husband and wife duo has been performing together since 1995. They tour in the US and Ireland, performing 150 concerts per year. They’ve produced 12 recordings, and their unique sound includes a wide range of stringed instruments, tin whistles, Doumbek, spoons, gemshorn, bowed psaltery, recorders, crumhorn, Native American Flutes, and more!
