YOGA News:

In more than one classical text of Chinese Medicine, the phrase “Wind is the Source of One Hundred Diseases” appears repeatedly.

If the “defensive qi” (think immune system) is weakened, “Evil Wind” can invade the body and cause sickness.

In the upper respiratory tract many different kinds of bacteria form a natural flora, which is kept under control by our immune system. Once the body is exposed to external cold, internal stress, or other factors that demand an immune response, the ability to keep this bacterial flora under control diminishes (think balance/imbalance). Result: ‘catching’ cold, recurring infections (viral and/or bacterial), trouble getting rid of an existing infection, muscle spasms, and a myriad assortment of signs and symptoms.

Evil Wind can be any “invader”, external or internal, which places stress on the proper functioning of the body.

Acupuncture treatments and herbal supplements can be very effective in cases of an altered immune response, and may break a vicious cycle. The treatments are regulatory; a weak immune system will be strengthened, and an overactive immune system will be calmed.

Regulating the immune system activates functioning of the bone marrow, white blood cells, spleen, tonsillar tissue, lymph nodes, thymus, and lymph tissue underlying mucous membranes.
