Cinema Cindy Reviews: Deadpool And Wolverine

“Deadpool and Wolverine” opened nationwide on Friday and is playing locally at SALA through August 8th. This is the third, major release Deadpool movie with Ryan Reynolds in the title role, after the original in 2016 and Deadpool 2 in 2018. (Apparently, there was one called “Once Upon a Deadpool”, also in 2018.) All of them have been rated “R”.

One reviewer wrote that this 2024 installment is “the goriest Marvel film ever put to screen.” It lives up to the description of Deadpool being “gleefully profane”, as one reviewer stated in 2016. On the other hand, what the film does offer is a chance for real-life buddies Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) to star in a Marvel action flick together.

Deadpool, a Marvel Comics mercenary with superpowers, has never been a team-player, never been accepted as an Avenger or an X-Man, and this has been bothering him. He’s still very loquacious, always going for the joke at the most inappropriate times. But he seems depressed, working as a car salesman with his friend Peter (Rob Delaney). His ex-girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) thinks he’s avoiding his full potential. But this narcissist has, nevertheless, made good friends who have become important to him.

Deadpool is captured by Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) and learns his world will end in a matter of hours. So, he visits other universes to seek out a living Wolverine to help him save Deadpool’s world. (Our Wolverine died at the end of the story in Logan, 2017.) Eventually he finds a Wolverine who could be talked into helping, and off they go to save the world.

Along the way they encounter other Marvel comic superheroes, including Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Blade (Wesley Snipes), Gambit (Channing Tatum) and Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). Historic Marvel villains also appear, attempting to foil their noble plans at every turn.

Marvel fans will love this film’s references to many other superhero characters and storylines. These folks should be sure to stay for the credits to see a montage of past films. And do stay in your seat all through the credits for the usual Marvel end cap scene.

This reviewer noticed that audience laughter came from different people at different times, finding very different elements of the film funny. No one walked out, but some movie-goers may take offense at the many violent action scenes, the blood and gore, coarse language, innumerable attempts at very crude sexual humor, and the taboo desecration of a grave.

Deadpool and Wolverine is “Rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references.” In fact, it may be rated NC-17, so be aware of that. If one can put aside their shock and offense at crude language and violent battle scenes, there is much humor in this film. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman had lots of laughs making it.
