I Love the Co+op Because …

By KAREN KENDALL
Co+op board treasurer

Your Los Alamos Co+op Market Board has been having a busy and fun summer attending Gordon’s concerts to meet folks and talk about the Co+op.

We’ve been asking people at the concerts to write on our white board and finish the sentence “I love our Co+op because…” We have been taking photos of people and their responses. Those pictures are now appearing on our Facebook page and also will be displayed at the store. It has been so humbling and satisfying to hear the many, many reasons people love our Co+op. This also got me thinking about why I love the Co+op.

Our president, Tracy McFarland, wrote last month about coming home to the Co+op. That really struck a chord for me. I remember the very first meeting Nancy Savoia organized to talk about the idea of starting a Co+op – back in 2006. At that time, we had a small glimmer of what our Co+op might look like and what it would mean for our community. Our town pulled together and individuals and families in town personally lent the money needed to create the Co+op. It has become a wonderful place to shop, but the Co+op is so much more than just a fantastic store.

I love our Co+op because the fruits and vegetables are fresh and taste great. I love that I can meet the LOCAL area farmers who produce the fruits, veggies and who raise the animals that give us delicious milk, eggs, cheese and meat. I love that I can find yak and buffalo at our Co+op. I love that when I walk in the door, I am not only greeted by name, but often hugged. The hugs are not only from the folks who work there, but from friends and neighbors who enjoy being at the Co+op.

I love the feeling of ordering a freshly made sandwich and taking it out to the patio for a relaxing meal with the amazing views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. I love that I can walk to the Co+op on a paved trail with wonderful views. I know this sounds very corny. But, the many people who have cheerfully and  proudly told us what it is they love about the Co+op has literally overwhelmed me with complete joy that we have the Co+op in our town.

Those of us at the first meeting way back in 2006 did not dare to imagine the outpouring of enthusiastic support and love of the Co+op that we experienced since the opening. I am filled with gratitude to our community and the entire Co+op team who took a dream and turned it into a thriving marketplace where people want to shop, work and be.

Please come and join the Board for our exciting Member Appreciation Weekend Aug. 16 and 17. We are having an amazing Truckload Sale! Come get a free hug and tell us why you love the Co+op!
