DP Road Phase II Reconstruction Project Update

TLC Plumbing & Utility is working 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to upgrade utilities, communication lines (Comcast & Lumen) and install conduit for future County fiber. The roadway will be fully reconstructed and include curb and gutter, sidewalks, storm drain system, new street lighting and a cul-de-sac at the eastern end of the project.

Parking:

  • Parking restrictions continue along the south side of DP Road.  
  • A new parking lot south of the ACE Hardware store is now open to the public
  • Additional parking is available across and south of the Los Alamos Fire Training Academy.

Traffic Control:

  • Potholing to identify existing utilities along the south side of DP Road continues.
  • Later in the week, expect a possible lane shift for eastbound traffic on DP Road from the Fire Academy property to CrossFit Los Alamos Gym. 
  • Follow all work zone signs and exercise caution; flaggers may direct traffic during certain construction events.
  • Access to businesses will be maintained; westbound traffic direction remains unchanged. 

Rose Street Reconstruction Project

TLC Plumbing & Utility is working 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to reconstruct the roadway and upgrade utilities on Rose Street from Central Avenue to Peach Street, including sections of Peach Street and Spruce Street. Project impacts this week:

Traffic Impact:

  • Notification and coordination with residents on construction logistics, utility upgrades, and traffic changes.
  • Follow detour signs; detours ensure ingress and egress to residences.
  • Expect large equipment and construction noise.

Urban Trail Phase I and II Project

Crews with Hasse Contracting Company will work from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, with possible weekend work if needed to construction of a 10-foot-wide concrete multi-use trail 0.434 miles in length between the intersection of Trinity Drive and 20th Street, through the Fuller Lodge grounds to the intersection of Ponderosa Street and Spruce Street. 

As of June 7 at 3 p.m., the segment of Canyon Rd that was closed to through traffic for the construction of a retaining wall is open.

From June 10, construction will continue on the Urban Trail along the north side of Canyon Road between the Tennis Courts and Los Alamos Nature Center driveway.

The north shoulder on Canyon in this area is closed, but two lanes of traffic will generally be maintained with flaggers assisting when needed.

Please “share the road” with bicyclists where shoulder closures occur.

Work will also continue in the wooded area by the Tennis Courts, with the parking lot closed for staging.

The tennis court and wallboard are closed; alternatives are available at Urban Park, Myrtle Tennis/Pickleball Courts, Piñon Park, and Barranca Mesa Park.

Activities include installing a precast boardwalk and constructing the trail from Spruce Street.

Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to use caution and avoid entering the work zones.

Overlook Park Irrigation Work

The section of trail at Overlook Park between Spirio Soccer Field and Softball Field 3 is closed to all traffic, including pedestrians. This closure is necessary for work on interconnecting the irrigation system with the potable water system as a backup to the reclaimed water that is typically used to water the fields. This work is expected to last into October. 

Quemazon Road Closure and Water Shut off – June 8 for water upgrades

A section of Quemazon Rd. will be closed on Saturday, June 8, while water system work takes place in the section of the Quemazon subdivision recently impacted by water breaks. Gas, Water and Sewer crews from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) will be upgrading underground valve hardware.

Concurrently, water will be turned off on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for residents on Sereno between Corona and Quemazon, Carriage House Drive, Eaton Place, Rosebud, and Quemazon between Sereno and Corona.

A recent series of water breaks in the area resulted from corrosion on the underground piping system. DPU staff developed a plan to proactively replace valve hardware in the subdivision with stainless steel components to prevent future water breaks.

Deacon Parking Lot (section of the lot closed) & evening water shut off, June 9th Gas, Water and Sewer crews from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) will be closing a section of the parking lot on the north side of Deacon Street between 15th and 20th streets from Thursday, June 6, through Sunday, June 9.

The closure is in preparation for a water service line replacement, which will occur on Sunday evening. All businesses in the block sandwiched between 15th and 20th streets, and Deacon Street and Central Avenue, will have no water service on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This work is scheduled for Sunday night to minimize disruption to the business community.

Vegetation Control Continues Countywide

Crews will continue vegetation control efforts countywide. Please watch for crews and equipment.

Asphalt Patching on 45th St. and 46th St. off Yucca Street continues

Weather permitting, crews will patch asphalt at intersections off Yucca Street at 45th St. and 46th streets. A flagging operation will be in place as needed. Work will continue until completed. Construction hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

Island Tip Painting continues on State Road 4 and on Diamond Drive

Crews continue to paint the tips of the median islands along State Road 4 in White Rock and on Diamond Drive in Los Alamos. Crews will begin daily at 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and continue until completion.

Curb Painting at the Mesa Library in Los Alamos

Crews are painting curbs at the Mesa Library. Work hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Concrete Work Begins Monday on Manhattan Loop, Rim Road, and Myrtle Street

Crews will be replacing the sidewalk, curb, and gutter at 400 Manhattan Loop, 531 Rim Road, and across the street from 1010 Myrtle. The sidewalks will be closed to pedestrians while repairs are being made. Work will begin Monday, June 10, and continue until completed. Work hours will be 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Non-County Projects: 

The following construction projects are not funded by Los Alamos County. Updates are included to keep residents informed of potential traffic impacts. Questions should be directed to the parties identified within each description. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.  

Trinity Drive at 35th Street (Hill Apartments)

Pavilion Construction is working Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (and weekends as needed)  to reconstruct the south side of Trinity Drive near the new 35th Street intersection as part of the 35th realignment project associated with the new Hill Apartments (work expected to continue through the end of June).

Lane Closures: Eastbound right lane will be closed and temporarily shifted to the center lane.

Bike Lane: Eastbound bike lane closed; motorists and bicyclists are asked to share the road.

Pedestrian Access: Sidewalk closures are posted; pedestrians should follow signage and avoid the work zone.

New Mexico 4/E. Jemez Road Intersection Project (NMDOT)

The contractor for the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) successfully applied OGFY (anti-friction surfacing) on Monday, June 3.

Upcoming Work:

Striping: Scheduled for Thursday and Friday, June 13 and 14. This will be a rolling operation with no lane closures.

Seeding: Tentatively scheduled for the week of June 17-21. This will take approximately 3-4 days and will not affect traffic.

Omega Bridge closed to pedestrian/bicycle traffic June 8-9 (LANL)

The Los Alamos Canyon (Omega) Bridge’s pedestrian walkway will be experiencing temporary closures Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, while Los Alamos National Laboratory crews perform an inspection and maintenance. Pedestrians and bicyclists will not have access to the path during the work and will need to find an alternative route.

The bridge will remain open to vehicular traffic.
