DP Road Phase II Reconstruction Project Update

TLC Plumbing & Utility work Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parking:

            • Parking will not be allowed south of DP Road outside of designated areas south of Ace Hardware and south of the Los Alamos Fire Training Academy. Parking will remain open during construction unless otherwise signed.
            • Temporary Parking will be allowed at designated locations south of DP Road as crews trench across to individual businesses starting Wednesday, Sept. 18

Traffic Control:

  • New traffic control pattern will be established Sept. 18 to allow crews area for utility trenches across DP road to businesses.
  • Follow all work zone signs and exercise caution; flaggers may direct traffic during certain construction events.
  • Access to businesses will be maintained.

Construction Operations:

  • Crews will perform utility tie-in of the water main and gas main Sept. 17 near the Los Alamos Fire Training Academy. Sept. 18 crews will tie in water at the TA-21 gate.

Urban Trail Phase I and II Project

Crews will work from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.

  • Construction of the Trail continues along the north side of Canyon Road between the Tennis Courts and Aquatic Center.
  • A partial closure of the Nature Center Driveway will be in place, but access will be maintained and the Nature Center remains open.
  • The north shoulder on Canyon remains closed, with two lanes of traffic generally maintained. 
  • Flaggers will be used when lane closures are needed for construction vehicles access to the work areas.
  • Work to construct the boardwalk section of the trail will also continue in the wooded area by the Tennis Courts.

Bathtub Row Reconstruction Project

TLC Plumbing & Utility will begin excavation and installation of the 12-inch water line on Bathtub Row from Central Ave. towards Oppenheimer Drive. The contractor will continue removals of various concrete sidewalks and curbs in the area.

Current Work Status: 

TLC Plumbing & Utility will continue excavation and installation of the waterline on Bathtub Row, Juniper Street, and Oppenheimer Drive. It will also continue placing new concrete sidewalks and curbs. 

Los Alamos County Utility crews will verify valve locations along Central Ave. between 20th St. and Oppenheimer Drive. Please use caution around the work zone. The eastbound bike lane will be closed. Motorists and bicyclists are asked to share the road.

The full road closure will remain in effect on Bathtub Row from Central to Oppenheimer (Mesa Public Library Driveway). Please continue to use the designated pedestrian path for access into and around Fuller Lodge, Museum, and Art Center.

Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, with the addition of Fridays and weekends, as needed. Residents can expect large equipment and construction noise.

Utilities Projects:

Replace hardware on 50 water valves in the Quemazon subdivision

DPU’s water crews are proactively replacing the hardware on 50 water valves in Quemazon before this winter to mitigate water line breaks in the area. DPU crews will work on weekends until all 50 are repaired.

Traffic and Streets Crews will make concrete and asphalt repairs after each repair. Crews will temporarily close sidewalks for repairs and place orange barrels in the road over manholes to allow them to cure. This should not have a huge impact on traffic. Moving flagging operations will be in place if needed. Work hours will be 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.

Overlook Park Irrigation Work Continues

The trail section at Overlook Park between Spirio Soccer Field and Softball Field 3 is closed to all traffic, including pedestrians. This closure is necessary for work on interconnecting the irrigation system with the potable water system as a backup to the reclaimed water that is typically used to water the fields. This work is expected to last into October.

Diamond Drive Pavement Preservation Continues

Traffic & Streets, in coordination with Dismuke Contractors, are planning to perform pavement preservation (crack sealing) on Diamond Drive. To minimize disruption to the travelling public, this work will continue until completed.

Crews will resume work Monday, Sept. 16, during the day, weather permitting, and will seal cracks along Diamond Drive in a mobile work zone approximately 100 feet in length between Trinity Drive and the roundabout at North Mesa, alternating on both sides of the road. Lane reductions with traffic control devices will be in place at the work zone, but two-way traffic along Diamond will be maintained at all times. Bicyclists may need to share lanes with vehicles in the work zone.

County Owned Parking Lot Striping Continues

San Bar, under contract with the County, will continue striping County-owned parking lots beginning Monday, Sept. 9. Traffic and Streets will coordinate with each building occupant(s) to provide notice to employees and the public when the striping will occur. Work will begin each day at 6 a.m. and continue until completed.

Monday, Sept. 16, they will stripe the Eco Station parking lot and re-striping the directional arrows.

Saturday, Sept. 21, they will strip the Municipal Building parking lot.

Sunday, Sept. 22, they will stripe the Aquatic Center parking lot.

Restricted Parking Area Striping Continues

San Bar, under contract with the County, will be painting restricted parking areas countywide, including no-parking curbs and restricted-parking curbs. We ask that motorists, pedestrians, and bicycle traffic avoid the work zones. The impact on vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic will be limited and intermittent. Asphalt Paving on 45th St. between Yucca Street and Alabama Ave. continues Traffic and Streets crews will continue paving a section of 45th St. between Yucca and Alabama.

They will close one lane at a time and have a flagging operation in place to direct traffic through the work zone. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily until the project is completed.

Non-County Projects: 

The following construction projects are not funded by Los Alamos County. Updates are included to keep residents informed of potential traffic impacts. Questions should be directed to the parties identified within each description. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.  

Boring Under DP Road at Trinity Drive and Knecht Street continues

Cablecom, LLC and High 5 Networks will be boring along the northwest corner of Trinity Drive at Knecht Street beginning Monday, Sept. 9. The project will continue through Sept. 13.

Work hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The boring will be within the sidewalk. The sidewalk will be closed and detoured to the northeast corner. For more information regarding this project, please contact David Kozlowski at 505.417.0955.

Pavilion Construction is managing the construction work of the Hill Apartments and the Realignment of 35th Street at Trinity Drive (NM-502).

Construction activities continue along the south side of Trinity Drive near the new 35th St. intersection, which will require the existing eastbound right lane to be closed and temporarily shifted to the center lane. This work zone will stay in place until approximately the end of September when this phase of the project is complete.

The eastbound bike lane is also closed. Motorists and bicyclists are asked to share the road. Sidewalk closures are posted, and pedestrians are asked to follow the signage and not enter the work zone.
