The Public Works/Traffic Division provides the latest updates on the following projects:

Traffic Alerts for Large Transports Next Week/ Expect Delays in these areas

Thursday Oct. 24: Barranca Mesa, Diamond Dr, Arkansas Ave, North Community:

Desert Wind Transport will be transporting a modular building from the Los Alamos Middle School down San Ildefonso Road to Diamond Drive to Arkansas and to Mountain Elementary on Thursday, Oct. 24. The move will occur starting at 10:30 a.m. and is anticipated to be finished by 11:30 p.m. LAPD will provide escort service as the modular will be moving toward on-coming traffic at the San Ildefonso Roundabout and as it navigates through traffic signals and intersections.

Saturday/Sunday Oct. 26/27: White Rock, Truck Route, Diamond, Arkansas, North Community

Desert Wind Transport will be transporting two modular buildings from Chamisa Elementary School in White Rock. The move will proceed down Meadow Lane West to Rover North, N.M. 4 East and up West Jemez Road (Truck Route), across the Omega Bridge, on Diamond Drive to Arkansas and to Mountain Elementary. The first modular will be transported Saturday, Oct. 26 starting at 10:30 a.m. and should be in place by noon. The second modular will be transported using the same route Sunday, Oct. 27 starting at 2 p.m. and should be in place by 3:30 p.m. LAPD will provide escort service for both modular building moves. 

Drivers are urged to maintain a safe speed and obey officers as they direct traffic while the modular moves are occurring.

Public Works/Traffic Division projects

White Rock: Fog Sealing begins Thursday – Rover, Grand Canyon, Bryce

Thursday, Oct. 24, GM Emulsion will begin fog sealing Rover at N.M. 4 and continue toward Grand Canyon Drive, then sealing Grand Canyon from N.M. 4 to Meadow Lane. They also will work on Bryce Avenue from Rover to Meadow Lane. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and work should be completed same day, weather permitting. Flagging operations will be in place. The contractor will be visiting area residents and businesses during the week to leave information on schedule, coordination and contact information.

North Mesa at intersection with San Ildefonso Road – valley gutter repairs

Work begins Monday. 

11th Street near Opal  – Curb, gutter, sidewalk repairs 

Work begins Tuesday.  

Quemazon near Torreon – road repairs 

Work begins Monday. Flagging operations will be in place.

Canyon Glen – asphalt and concrete road repairs 

Work begins Monday. Flagging operations will be in place.

Pedestrians and motorists are urged to slow down, obey all traffic devices and maintain a safe distance from the work zones during the above projects.

Other road construction projects

N.M. 502 Roundabout and Road Reconstruction (NMDOT project)

Tewa Loop access re-opens Oct. 18. No other change from last week’s report: N.M. 502 (Trinity Drive) eastbound and westbound traffic is shifted to the south side of N.M. 502 (Trinity Drive) for the section of roadway between Arroyo Lane and east of Tewa Loop with one lane of travel in each direction.

Access to businesses and buildings or parks located on the north side of N.M. 502 is being maintained.

The current detours between Knecht Street and Central Ave are the same: Eastbound N.M 502 traffic detours onto 4th Street and Central Avenue. After a full stop, motorists turn right (east) and travel through the construction zone to continue eastbound out of Los Alamos on N.M. 502. Westbound N.M. 502 traffic entering Los Alamos and approaching the roundabout construction zone detours onto Central Avenue then west to Knecht Street then left to return to Trinity Drive. 

Project hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please slow down, use caution and expect delays in this area, especially during peak commute times.

Traffic advisories from NMDOT are available on www.nmroads.com and motorists are asked to check the site for updates on this project as it proceeds.

TA-21 Clean Up Project – DP Road (N3B project)

No change from last week’s report. Clean-up work on the LANL TA-21 Site at the far eastern end of DP Road continues. Large trucks carrying away demolition debris containers will be exiting DP Road at an average of approximately three trucks per day. Motorists are asked to be alert for trucks exiting; use caution when entering or exiting DP Road, as this area is near the N.M 502 Road Reconstruction project.

Oppenheimer Road Excavation

Marcon Excavating, Inc continues excavating a section of road located near 557 Oppenheimer with a traffic lane shift in this area. The project timeline has been extended and it is now anticipated to wrap up by Oct. 31. Motorists are urged to drive slowly through this work zone and watch for pedestrians.

Cable projects around downtown Los Alamos

Kelly Cable will be conducting several fiber or cable repair projects next week on Trinity Drive, Deacon Street, Central Avenue – temporary sidewalk closures may occur.
