This week, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency in New Mexico.
Although the tendency is to panic during trying times like these, the most important thing we can do right now is to remain calm, heed the advice of experts, and take preventive measures to reduce the spread of the virus.
During my time in the CIA, I experienced many high-stress situations and national crises. But I also experienced what can be accomplished through diligence, cooperation, and swift action. My goal then and now is to serve and protect my community.
Right now, we each have a responsibility to take certain measures to keep ourselves and our communities protected. I recommend reviewing and following the guidance provided by credible sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New Mexico Department of Health.
There are currently 10 presumptive positive COVID-19 cases in New Mexico. We must each do our part to contain the spread of the virus. For that reason, our team will be canceling most in-person events and will modify our voter outreach strategy to focus primarily on digital channels. We must also urge Congress to do their part to pass swift legislation to provide support and relief to communities affected by COVID-19.
I’m confident we can get control of the situation through strong leadership, unity, and action.
Valerie Plame, a Democrat, is running for Congress in New Mexico’s 3rd District, which includes Los Alamos.
