CORO DE CAMARA News:

Coro de Cámara welcomes the acclaimed Princeton Girlchoir’s advanced touring ensemble Tuesday, July 11, to Los Alamos on its first concert stop of a summer Southwest tour. This is a unique opportunity for the Los Alamos community to hear two premier choruses in concert together.

The choruses will participate in an afternoon workshop together and then present a 7 p.m. concert at the United Church called “A Choral Tapestry.” The concert program weaves together a rich texture of musical styles and colors, including spirituals, pieces by notable living composers, and global selections. Each chorus will present its own set of music and then jointly share several exciting works.

Janet Westrick, who founded PGC in 1989 and now lives in Santa Fe, will make a guest conducting appearance. Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard will welcome the audience and introduce PGC.

Last fall, through the power of the Internet, PGC learned of Coro de Cámara’s excellent musical reputation in Northern New Mexico and began making inquiries about the possibility of a collaboration. Since one of Coro de Cámara’s ongoing goals is to collaborate with other musicians in performance, this was an opportunity that couldn’t be passed up. Several months later, plans for a joint event were underway. Now the two choruses are busy learning the repertoire for “A Choral Tapestry” and look forward to meeting and making music together in a few short weeks.

“PGC was founded as an after-school activity for girls interested in choral music and has grown into a top training and performance choir for girls, with over 290 choristers in grades 3 through 12 participating in six choirs each year,” PGC Artistic Director Dr. Lynnel Joy Jenkins said. “Fueled by the power of a girl’s voice, PGC presents extraordinary performances at home and throughout the world, while educating the musician, building confidence, and fostering a life-long love of singing together.”

Notable PGC performances include the North American premiere of Tan Dun’s Symphony 1997 with Yo-Yo Ma at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center; multiple appearances at Carnegie Hall; performances for dignitaries such as Hillary Rodham Clinton, Jeb Bush, Rush Holt, and Sandra Day O’Connor; performing the national anthem at several professional sporting events; and appearances at conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, Organization of American Kodály Educators, and New Jersey Music Educators Association.

Suggested donations accepted at the door: $20 adults and $10 students. Light refreshments offered after the performance.
