County Makes Farolito Sand Available To Community

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Traffic and Streets Division has placed sand at various  locations in Los Alamos and White Rock for the community to fill farolito bags for the holiday.

For those new to the area, farolito is the Spanish word for little lantern. Every December across New Mexico plazas, churches, homes and businesses are lit up with farolitos.

These decorative winter holiday lanterns are made with brown paper bags, which are filled partway with sand and a lit tea candle or small votive. Once lit and set, luminarias glow with a unique warmth that is unmatched throughout the year.

Sand Locations:

  • North Road Near Quemazon Place Entrance;
  • Deer Trap on Barranca Mesa;
  • Soccer Field Parking Lot on North Mesa; and
  • Transfer Station parking lot in White Rock.
