County Announces Modified Holiday Hours For July 3-4

In observance of our 250th Independence Day, Los Alamos County government offices will join other federal, state, and local governments and close Friday, July 3. 

While the County’s administrative offices, Atomic City Transit fixed bus routes, and the Environmental Services division are closed on Friday, the following facilities will be open or have modified hours during the holiday weekend:

Community Invited To Take Survey #2 Regarding Comprehensive Plan Update

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County invites residents, business owners, community partners, and members of the local workforce to participate in the Plan Los Alamos Community Survey. The survey builds on vision scenarios developed from the initial Comprehensive Plan survey results and is open through July 11. The survey is part of the County’s 2026 Comprehensive Plan Update and will help guide future decisions related to land use, housing, transportation, infrastructure, and economic development.

Los Alamos County invites community members to attend the second community engagement session for the Los Alamos Mesa Trail Rehabilitation Project at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 24, at Fuller Lodge.

With bear activity in the community, residents should be aware of when and how to safely scare a bear.

YES — If the bear is anywhere it should not be: eating garbage, bird seed or pet food; near a vehicle, building, chicken coop or garden. 

NO — If hazing the bear would chase it into people, dogs, a busy road or another unsafe situation. 

NO — If the bear is in a natural area where bears belong. 

NO — If the bear is running away or up a tree. 

NO — If the bear is a cub. You could easily injure the cub and cause the mother to react defensively.

UPDATE: NM 4 Closed Truck Route Has Reopened

Traffic Alert:

UPDATE: LOS ALAMOS COUNTY NM 4 Road closure has ended. Please drive safely.

Due to a motor vehicle accident on N.M. 4, the Los Alamos Police Department has closed the road between East Jemez Road (Truck Route) and Rover Boulevard.

Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route.

The closure is anticipated to last two hours. A follow-up message will be published when the road has been re-opened.

Scenes From Mosaic Mural Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The community came out Saturday to snip the ceremonial ribbon on Los Alamos County’s newest piece of art, a mosaic mural installed on the exterior wall of the Justice Center, facing Trinity Drive and Oppenheimer Drive. This particular piece of art is unique in the County’s collection because the public had a hand in creating it. A three-day workshop was held June 5-7 at Mesa Public Library during which the public was invited to create the different panels that make up the mural. Customer Care & DPU To Close 2.5 Hours June 24 For Picnic

COUNTY News:

The lobby-facing windows at the Los Alamos County Customer Care Center in the Municipal Building as well as the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) suite will be closed for 2.5 hours during the business day on Wednesday, June 24, between 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., while staff attends an annual employee picnic.

Additionally, DPU and the Customer Care Center will be closed Friday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

Community Invited To Transportation Board Meeting To Discuss Jersey Barrier Replacement At Ashley Pond Park

The Los Alamos County Transportation Board has scheduled a special meeting to discuss the replacement options for the Jersey barriers currently in place at Ashley Pond Park. The meeting will focus on reviewing alternatives, considering public safety and aesthetic factors, and determining recommended next steps for County Council.

Smoke Visible From Fire West Of Española

The Rio Fire, a lightning-strike fire that was first detected Tuesday evening, has burned about 5-10 acres in a previously burned area on the Santa Fe National Forest.

Smoke will be visible as the fire is burning in a remote area that is difficult to access.

There is no threat to Los Alamos from this fire.
