Council Holding Closed / Regular Meetings Tuesday

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Council will hold a closed session from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 in the conference room of the Community Building at 20th Street and Central Avenue.

The Council will follow the closed session with a regular meeting at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers that is open to the media and public.

Also, pursuant to a request from Council, the previously scheduled Dec. 11 Council Work Session in White Rock has been changed to be a Regular Council Meeting in Council Chambers at the Community Building in Los Alamos. Council has requested that this meeting be televised. Read More

Pet of the Week: Shyloh is having a hard time understanding why he’s still at the shelter.

This mixed breed is pretty much the perfect dog … confident, affectionate, friendly, housebroken and he enjoys the company of children and other dogs.

Los Alamos Police Increase Patrols For Holidays

LAPD News:

An increased number of Los Alamos police officers will be out in force patrolling the streets of Los Alamos County beginning today and continuing throughout the holidays.  

Police will be on the lookout for drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They encourage resident to immediately report drivers suspected of being under the influence to 662-8222.

The officers also will be watching for anyone attempting to burglarize vehicles, businesses or homes in the area.

Miracle Kitten Survives Sub-freezing Temperatures

On a recent cold Sunday afternoon with temperatures sliding to sub-freezing for the night, a small kitten was found at the Los Alamos land fill.

The good Samaritans brought the nearly dead kitten to the police department. Friends of the Shelter volunteers were contacted, and the kitten was transported to the Emergency Clinic in Santa Fe.

The Eco Station, also known as the County landfill, will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23 in observance of Thanksgiving.

Library Catalog Offline Nov. 27 for Software Upgrade

The Los Alamos County Library System online catalog will be unavailable to patrons 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Though patrons may not notice a big difference, the planned upgrade to the integrated library system software will increase efficiency for librarians’ behind-the-scenes tasks.

While the system is unavailable patrons will not be able to use any online services: they will not be able to search for books, make requests, check their account, or use the downloadable e books and audio books services.

‘WinterFest’ Kicks Off Holiday Fun Dec. 7-9

Winterfest 2012 begins Friday, Dec. 7 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 9.

WinterFest begins with the 19th annual Los Alamos Crèche Show, held annually on the first weekend of December.

“Crèches,” or nativity scenes featuring the Christ child, are prominently displayed by Los Alamos residents for all to see.

Because Los Alamos’ residents come from all over the world, there is always a myriad of beautiful crèches on display.

Los Alamos Canyon Bridge Work Begins Nov. 17

 A damaged expansion joint on the south end of the Los Alamos Canyon Bridge, known as Omega Bridge, is being replaced beginning Saturday, Nov. 17.

Los Alamos National Laboratory plans to do the work on weekends when vehicle traffic is reduced. Planned workdays include Nov. 17, Nov. 18, Dec. 1 and Dec. 2.

One lane of the bridge will be closed in each direction and there may be brief periods when traffic is stopped while material is being moved, said Vince Sing of Project Management.
