Fire Stations Compete in New Green Team Energy Challenge
LOS ALAMOS COUNTY News:
Los Alamos County’s employee-based “Green Team” has launched a competition between Fire Stations 3, 4 and 6 to challenge them to reduce their electricity and natural gas usage for the next six months — from August through January 2013.
Green Team members launched the competition earlier this month after meeting with firefighters and brainstorming ways that they could save energy.
Ideas included such simple steps as turning off lights when leaving a room or better managing AC/heating usage.

County Settles Stepan Case

Los Alamos County has settled the sex discrimination case brought by former Assistant County Administrator Diana Stepan.
The County issued the following statement today regarding the settlement: “Los Alamos County and former employee Diana Stepan reached a settlement agreement on Aug. 1, 2012. The settlement addresses a claim that Stepan had filed last year against the County and former Acting County Administrator Randy Autio after her termination of employment. Democratic candidate Ken Johnson officially withdrew his name from the Los Alamos County Council race, filing his paperwork with the Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office late this morning.
Johnson shared with the Los Alamos Daily Post his reasons for leaving the race.

UPDATE: The Democratic Headquarters will open to the public with regular hours begining Saturday, Aug. 25.
The Los Alamos County Democratic Party inked a deal this afternoon to lease a space in Central Park Square for its 2012 campaign headquarters.

Los Alamos Police Target Impaired Drivers
LAPD News:
During August and September, the Los Alamos Police Department will conduct DWI checkpoints.
Officers will be targeting impaired drivers on the roadways and at checkpoints throughout the County of Los Alamos.

With this upgrade, CodeRED Mobile Alert subscribers may now view weather alerts for the entire country, with previous access limited to a 500-mile radius.

Update to 4:30 p.m. power outage caused by lightning to local substation: DPU customers still without power should call 311 or 662-8333 ASAP.
A major electrical power failure hit the entire County of Los Alamos at 1:50 p.m. today.

The Community and Economic Development Department (CEDD) is once again tackling a major revision to Los Alamos County’s sign code.
CEDD believes that this time will be the charm for getting the sign code revised and approved by the County Council. CEDD has an aggressive schedule to move the sign code to Council approval before the end of the year.
Draft revisions as a result of more public input and a public hearing by the Planning and Zoning Commision are planned.

Thursday’s CIP Evaluation & Oversight Meeting Canceled
COUNTY News:
The CIP Evaluation and Oversight Committee will not meet Thursday, Aug. 16.
Instead, the committee will take a private tour on Friday afternoon of the new Municipal Complex under construction on Central Avenue.
The committee plans to meet at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 with County Administrator Harry Burgess in a special committee meeting in Council Chambers.
This will be the only agenda item for the meeting. The public is welcome to attend.

Police Halt Jail Fight This Morning

LAPD News:
A fight between inmates broke out this morning at the Los Alamos County Detention Center.
Police officers stepped in and stopped the fight quickly.
Los Alamos Fire Department EMTs were called to the scene and are transporting this 24-year-old inmate to the Los Alamos Medical Center as a precaution.
Medic 3 considers this a non-emergency transport.
The cause of the fight is not readily known.
