Daily Postcard: Fish Scale Ice Crystals On Reservoir Road

Daily Postcard: An ice formation spotted Monday along the Reservoir Road depicts crystals forming in the snow as a result of the snow ‘aging’ that closely overlap, looking like fish scales. This snow in the bottom of the canyon is now around 3-weeks old. During that time, this section of the canyon bottom has been exposed to the sun for only a few hours each day, with the temperature at that time only around freezing. The rest of the day, the temps have been well below freezing. These ice crystals seem to form within the snow, at an angle not parallel to the snow surface. They may be forming along the planes formed as the snow fell or drifted in differential layers. The guess is that during the few hours of sunlight, a little snow melts, with the water oozing down to the layer division, where it then freezes. Photo by Randal Pair
