Daily Postcard: Wave Of Fog Descends Over Valle Grande

Daily Postcard: A wave of fog descends from the south rim of Valles Caldera on Tuesday into Valle Grande. In the center of the valley is the small, forested dome Cerro la Jara. After the cataclysmic eruption that formed Valles Caldera 1.2-million years ago, several smaller eruptions occurred within its footprint over time. During these smaller eruptions, lava oozed up into rounded piles on the caldera floor, creating lava domes like Cerro la Jara. The name ‘Valles Caldera; was inspired by this unusual landscape of sweeping grassland valleys, or valles in Spanish, surrounded by forested volcanic domes. As Valles Caldera is dormant, not extinct, this landscape remains dynamic, and new landforms will likely appear with the next volcanic event. To learn more, click here. Courtesy/NPS
