Free Workshops in Early Childhood Education (ECE) at Santa Fe Community College for a series of four innovative and groundbreaking math learning opportunities!

Playing with Math in Early Childhood Through a Cultural Lens (PreK-3):
- 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. May 20 – Finding Math Quilting
- 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. June 17 – Exploring Math in Clothing
- 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. July 15 – Creating Meaningful Math Games
Children‘s math skills upon entry to Kindergarten are some of the best predictors of their success in STEM, reading aptitude in 3rd grade, and future enrollment in college. When young children learn math in ways that are fun, playful, and culturally relevant, their interest, attention, and focus is dramatically increased as learning is deepened.
In ECE’s first of four sessions, preschool and toddler teachers across public, private and pueblo settings laughed and learned about using cultural textiles to promote children’s understanding of math concepts. Teachers were highly engaged in exploring math using ethnically, culturally and inter-generationally meaningful fabrics (e.g., tablecloths, clothing, scarfs) in ways to teach young children how to enjoy learning math.
