The Opportunity Scholarship, to benefit an estimated 55,000 students for fall 2020, will make N.M. second state in U.S. to provide free four-year higher education

Michelle Lujan Grisham announced today that the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship, a new program that will, in conjunction with existing state and federal scholarship and grant infrastructure, provide for 100 percent of undergraduate tuition and fees at New Mexico institutions of higher education for eligible in-state resident students.

Rotary: Lillian Petersen Discusses Research

Los Alamos High School senior Lillian Petersen has won multiple awards at Intel Science and Engineering competitions. At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos, she described how she analyzes large data sets to investigate climate, agriculture, malnutrition and poverty. She explained her research on creating a real-time monitoring system to predict crop yields in every African nation several months before harvest and how this tool can predict areas of malnutrition. Budget analysts in New Mexico expect the Legislature will have an incredible $907 million of so-called “new money” when they convene in January. A vast majority of that money comes from the boom in oil and gas production in the Permian Basin.

With nearly $8 billion available in 2020, the general fund budget will be up nearly 27 percent over just two years. Even fans of bigger government have to be concerned about the rapid rate of government expansion in such a short period of time.

LAHS 2019 Homecoming Week Activities Sept. 16-21

This week Los Alamos will don green and gold to celebrate Homecoming 2019.

“It’s that time of the year when everyone is a Topper,” said Jonathan Lathrop, co-sponsor of the Los Alamos High School Student Council. “Our Student Leadership team has been very busy planning a lot of activities to celebrate this tradition.”

All interested individuals are invited to a community conversation Tuesday, Sept. 24, hosted by the Los Alamos High School student data analysis group, RAPS, to address the signs of sadness, self-harm and suicide in youth.

According to the 2017 Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey of LAHS students, 33.2 percent felt sad or hopeless in the past 12 months and 24.5 percent intentionally injured themselves.

Luján Joins Colleagues To Restore Pell Grant Eligibility For Victims Of Predatory, For-Profit Colleges

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), the U.S. House Assistant Speaker, joined colleagues Thursday to introduce the Pell Grant Restoration Act.

This critical legislation, introduced by U.S. Reps. Jahana Hayes (CT-05), Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) and Lucy McBath (GA-06), would amend Title IV of the Higher Education Act to restore students’ Pell Grant eligibility for any period of time during which they would have qualified for loan forgiveness due to school closure or institutional fraud or misconduct.
