Pro basketball player Alex Kirk participates in Knights of Columbus Scholarship Golf Tournament Friday at the Los Alamos County Golf Course. The funds raised from this tournament will be used to award scholarships to Los Alamos High School graduating seniors. For more than 19 years, this tournament has attracted sponsors and golfers from Los Alamos and around Northern New Mexico and has awarded an estimated $145,000 in scholarship money. Each year the New Mexico Senior Golf Association awards $20,000 scholarships to graduating seniors throughout New Mexico. The candidates are evaluated on several criteria including, grade average, activities participation, and community involvement during their high school careers. George and Joan Bjarke were longtime residents of Los Alamos and staunch supporters of education. A scholarship in their name is awarded annually to students who demonstrate good citizenship and the ability to successfully complete their selected degree or program.
