LAPS ACT Assessment Scores At A Glance

In 2016, 204 graduating LAPS students took the ACT test. The average composite score was 24.4, with average scores of 24.1 in English, 23.3 in mathematics, 25.2 in reading, and 24.4 in science.  The highest possible score is 36.

The average scores in Los Alamos were higher than the average scores across the state. In New Mexico 13,435 students took the test and received an average composite score of 19.9, with an average score of 18.9 in English, 19.5 in Mathematics, 20.5 in reading, and 20.1 in science.

NMPED Releases Annual School Grades

Today, the New Mexico Public Education Department released individual school grades. Here is information to keep in mind when reviewing the school grade reports.

First, the PED School Grades are primarily a measure of increases in state test scores. The school grades are not a reflection of overall student achievement or quality of teaching.

Volunteers Needed For Adult Literacy Program

The Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program provides free one-to-one tutoring for adults reading below 6th grade level, and for new English learners. Volunteer tutorsare needed to help an adult in the community learn to read better, or learn to speak English.
 
The requirement is just two hours per week and the volunteer chooses the time. Meet in any public location, including the Los Alamos or White Rock library.

The Public Education Department’s release of Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) scores is a positive sign. However, the continued use of these scores for high stakes decisions is still just as misguided as it ever was. Students And Parents To Receive PARCC Test Results

Students and parents in the Los Alamos Public Schools will be receiving PARCC Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) reports by Friday Sept. 2.  

Based upon feedback, this year’s student report has been improved for clarity. Several key elements of the score report have been updated into visual representations tobetter show results. These changes were developed because parents want to know how their child is doing, and where they need help. The LAPS goal is for continuous improvement in communications.
