Crowley, Serrano, Luján Language In Support Of STEM Grants For Hispanic Serving Institutions Included In Appropriations Bill

CONGRESSIONAL News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. ― Representatives Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), vice chair of the Democratic Caucus and José E. Serrano (D-the Bronx) announced the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill includes their push to require the National Science Foundation to move forward with a grant program to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

Joanne Camp and Shepard Sobel will present a two-day Acting and Directing workshop on consecutive Saturdays, June 25 and July 2 at the Performing Arts Center in Los Alamos.

Each instructional day will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. On the first day (first weekend), participants will separate into two groups, with each group following a separate instructional track in the workshop.

National Report: New Mexico Still Ranks 49th For Overall Child Well-Being

ALBUQUERQUE — New Mexico retains its ranking of 49th out of 50 states, according to the 2016 KIDS COUNT® Data Book, released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

This marks the third year in a row that the state has ranked next-to-last in the nation for child well-being; only Mississippi has ranked lower. However, New Mexico has shown some progress in some indicators of child well-being–particularly in health, where the state rose four positions to 44th place.

Twenty-two Los Alamos High School students won gold, 14 students won silver and 11 students won bronze medals in the 2016 National German Exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG).

Pajarito Environmental Education Center’s Jemez Mountain Herbarium Curator Chick Keller will lead a monthly Wildflower Walk at 5:30 p.m., Monday, June 20, to introduce people to local wildflowers.

Each month Keller will pick a different trail, depending on what is blooming at the time. These monthly outings will be easy walks to identify some of the flowering beauties found in and around Los Alamos. The walks are free and there is no advance registration required.

Growing up in Cerrillos, NM, life for Solomon Sindelar was anything but typical. The small town located on the Turquoise Trail south of Santa Fe is known for its rich mining history, dirt roads, and old storefronts reminiscent of the Wild West.

The rural quality of life appealed to Solomon’s parents when they relocated from Colorado to raise their family in an off-the- grid home and start a solar electric company.
