The World Heart Federation and the World Health Organization tells us that cardiovascular disease (CVD) – heart disease and stroke – is the biggest killer of women globally, killing more women than all cancers, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. Here are a few remarkable statistics:

Fourteen EV3 Lego Mindstorms Kits were waiting for them as they arrived back to school in January. This very popular after school club had been limited by the failing 11 NXT Lego Mindstorms Kits that they had been using for the last four years. O’Neill, 18, is a member of Los Alamos County 4-H and the youngest certified member of the National Ski Patrol in Los Alamos, where she has volunteered for the past four years. House Education Committee Passes Truancy Bill

SANTA FE  Legislation to ensure all New Mexico students make it to class passed the House Education Committee by a vote of 7-5. The bill, HB 240, is sponsored by Rep. Jimmie Hall It would establish programs to prevent truancy, and it would also allow driver’s licenses of habitually truant students to be suspended.
 
“In order to learn, our students need to be in class,” Hall said. “The steps outlined in this bill would help schools identify and assist students before they make skipping class part of their daily routine.”

NHD or National History Day is an educational club at the highschool designed to promote the study of history. Students can create a website, performance, documentary, paper, or exhibit based on a theme. This year’s theme is Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange. Recently, A.J. Bowers of RPC CPAs + Consultants, LLP presented audit results to the Los Alamos School Board. The opinion rendered was Unmodified, which is the highest level possible.

Dr. Richard Melzer Lectures On Security At Los Alamos During The Manhattan Project

HISTORICAL SOCIETY News:

Dr. Richard Melzer will present a lecture on security at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9.

He will discuss the theory of how security was supposed to work at that time, the reality of how bad security was during the war, and how at least three Soviet spies were able to exploit security weaknesses to steal the secret of the bomb, leading to the successful development of a Soviet atomic weapon by 1949.

Melzer is originally from Teddy Roosevelt’s hometown of Oyster Bay, N.Y. He has lived in New Mexico since 1973.

Soto Pushes Better Pay For Critical School Employees

SANTA FE – Sen. Daniel Ivey-Soto, D-15-Bernalilo, has introduced legislation to increase the pay of some low paid school district employees to improve their economic circumstances.

Currently, the minimum pay rate for school district cafeteria staff, school bus drivers, and all non-certified school personnel and educational assistants is $6 per hour. The Ivey-Soto bill, SB 152, will increase wages for these employees to $15 per hour and will be heard in Senate Education Committee tomorrow.

Los Alamos Historical Society Offering Overnight Tour To Trinity Site

HISTORICAL SOCIETY News:

Trinity Site, the location where on July 16, 1945, the first man-made nuclear explosion was detonated, is open only twice a year, and the Los Alamos Historical Society is offering a guided tour to the site April 1 and 2 for the spring opening.
