Letter To The Editor: Please Join Us In The Renewal Of HB33 School Tax
By SUSAN AND TIM O’LEARYThis week, Los Alamos voters received a mail-in ballot on the question of continuing a modest property tax levy to support our local public schools. The measure authorizes the continuation of a $3.25 tax on every $1,000 dollars of assessed real property valuation. Because of all the exemptions in our housing valuation system, a yes vote on this ballot would mean that a typical home with a market value of $300,000 would continue to pay a little over $300 a year, generating about $2.2 million per year for our local schools.
We’re writing to respectfully ask Read More

Letter To The Editor: Don’t Let Naysayers Destroy Our Precious School … Vote Yes On HB33 Mill Levy
By DAVID IZRAELEVITZThere is a story of a farmer who, panicked by the approaching winter, decided to eat his seed corn along with his harvest so he would have more to eat then. When he survived the winter, there was no planting in spring, and he starved in summer.
I read the letters and internet postings opposing the school district mill levy that we have received by mail a few days ago, and can’t help but see the same story. The seed corn of Los Alamos County is our schools. Our excellent schools is what brings young families to live in Los Alamos, what keeps our home prices

Letter To The Editor: Confusion About Funding For School Transportation … Facts To Keep In Mind
By KURT STEINHAUS, LAPS SuperintendentIn reading the letter from Mr. Bayfield, we can see why there is confusion about funding for school transportation.
Here are several facts to keep in mind. First, the state of New Mexico requires every school district to provide free transportation to and from school for all eligible students.
Second, the state funding formula does not provide enough money to transport our students to school. Because of this shortfall, the district has to use other funds to supplement transportation. Over the last three years, Read More
