LAPS Issues Recap Of LAMS Fire Alarm Activation
LAPS News:
The Los Alamos Public Schools released a recap of this morning’s fire alarm activation at Los Alamos Middle School.
At 7:29 a.m. today, the Los Alamos Middle School fire alarm system was automatically activated from a sensor in the hallway between the staff lounge and the art room.
- LAFD and LAPS facilities personnel were dispatched to check the building;
- Safety first – everyone left the building safely; students were sent to the football field and other evacuation areas; staff helped with traffic control;
- The Superintendent provided a live KRSN interview from the LAMS parking

Readership response to the story published Sept. 10 in the Los Alamos Daily Post on the salary and stipend policy issues at Los Alamos Public Schools is much appreciated.
The published salaries of LAPS employees included stipends, which account for a portion of the disparity of salaries among some employees. Other factors include, tenure, education, certifications, hours worked and evaluations.

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) received a Small Educational Outreach award in August from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation Board of Directors.
This award provides funding in the amount of $1500 to allow Los Alamos fifth graders to attend bird banding field trips.

Los Alamos Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kurt Steinhaus congratulates five Los Alamos High School students for being selected to serve as liaisons to the School Board.
The new liaisons include:
- Seniors John Rees and Deanna Gutierrez;
- Juniors Neil DeHerrera and Claire DeCroix; and
- Jennifer Wang will serve as an alternate.
Their work begins with attendance at a briefing session Oct. 7, and then a regular School Board meeting Oct. 13.

The Los Alamos High School Hilltalkers and the Los Alamos Middle School Hawktalkers speech and debate teams will be hosting the “Peak Speech and Debate Tournament” at Mesa Public Library and Los Alamos High School Friday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26.
A model Congress tournament is 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Mesa Public Library and Fuller Lodge. Speech rounds, Policy, Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas debate rounds are 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Los Alamos High School.

Los Alamos Student John Mamula Wins Audition At New Mexico School For The Arts

John Mamula of Los Alamos was chosen through a statewide audition to enter into his sophomore year of high school at the New Mexico School for the Arts (NMSA) in Santa Fe.
He will be studying in NMSA’s instrumental music department, with a focus on cello. Mamula has been focusing on his cello studies for more than four years and has received statewide recognition for his accomplishments.
