Aspen Campus Closed for Construction
LAPS News:
Construction has started on Aspen Elementary School. As of June 5, the entire campus will be closed to all public and staff.
As part of the classroom addition and main office remodel, LAPS has deemed the campus closed. This is for the safety and welfare of the public and staff and includes the entire campus, building, parking lot, soccer field and playground.
Assist the School District in the construction process and eliminate any and all visits to Aspen Elementary until the campus is reopened in late July. Read More

Aaron Bao received the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Scholarship awarded to one student for outstanding promise in science and mathematics. PEEC is offering Hiking Los Alamos 101. The class will meet 6-8 p.m. Mondays June 3-24.
This first session will take place in the PEEC classroom, where expert hiker Craig Martin will go over safety and comfort on the trail. He also will teach map-reading skills. After that, the group will meet at various trails for hikes.
Martin and others will be hike leaders, with interpreters from PEEC for hikes and a “last in line” person from the County Recreation Department.

The Hawk-2-Hilltopper event for graduating 8th graders is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, May 31 at Urban Park, despite the fact that Los Alamos Middle School is holding its last day of school Wednesday.
The annual event includes a BBQ lunch, music, giant inflatable toys, and ends with the always hilarious shaving cream melee.

Chamisa Elementary Holding Reunion Tuesday
CHAMISA News:Classes Resume Tuesday at Barranca Mesa
LAPS News:
Classes will resume at Barranca Mesa Elementary School Tuesday, May 28.
Classes were canceled Thursday and Friday, May 22-23, due to damage sustained to the school from a fierce wind event that peeled the roof off the gymnasium and dropped it on the library and preschool playground area.
Workers have been removing debris and preparing the school for classes Tuesday.

Tech Frontiers 2013 Deadline Approaching

The Los Alamos School Board unanimously approved the operating budget for 2013-14 at the Thursday, May 23 meeting of the School Board.
Next year’s budget placed a high priority on the Board’s desire to raise student achievement to an even higher level. Professional development funding for staff was increased to train staff in Common Core and to train K-12 staff in the new math adoption.

Destructive Dirt Funnel Above Barranca School
The destructive dirt funnel as it traveled above Barranca Mesa Elementary School today was captured on camera by a local citizen. The fierce wind ripped the roof off the school’s gymnasium and dropped it on the library and playground area. Superintendent Gene Schmidt has officially announced that classes are canceled both Thursday and Friday at Barranca Mesa Elementary School due to damage caused by this afternoon’s severe wind.
Family YMCA Executive Director Linda Daly has announced that the Y After School Program at Barranca is canceled Thursday and Friday as well.
The Los Alamos Daily Post will publish photos taken at the scene of the wind damage later today.
