Earth Day Planning Underway at PEEC

April is just around the corner – time to leave those winter blues behind and get out and explore.
April is also the month to celebrate Earth Day 2013.
This is the 13th year that Pajarito Environmental Education Center has sponsored an Earth Day Festival.
Put April 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on your calendar; plan to come and have fun at PEEC, your local nature center at 3540 Orange St.

Underground of Enchantments Opens April 5

Underground of Enchantment is a 3D photo exhibit featuring the beautiful, magical, microbial secrets of one of the most interesting caves in the world – Lechuguilla Cave in southeastern New Mexico.
The exhibit opens from 4-5:30 p.m. Friday, April 5 at Mesa Public Library Art Gallery and 5-6:30 p.m. at PEEC and continues through May 29.
The cave is part of Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the exhibit originated with and is traveled by Carlsbad Museum and Art Center.

Students Host Renaissance Spaghetti Dinner

Los Alamos High School National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is hosting a Renaissance Spaghetti Dinner 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 26 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on North Road.
Funds raised will support the NAHS scholarship. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 13 and younger and may be purchased at the door or from NAHS members.

The Los Alamos School Board has scheduled an Executive Session at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 28 at Mountain Elementary School.
The purpose of this meeting is to discuss personally identifiable information about an individual student per Section 10-15-1-H(4) of the Open Meetings Act and collective bargaining negotiations per per Section 10-15-1-H(5) of the Open Meetings Act.

Come to PEEC at 6:30 p.m. April 5, to learn about the history of exploration in Lechuguilla Cave.
Local caver John Lyles will present highlights of his 20 years of involvement in the project to map Lechuguilla.
Volunteers dug open Lechuguilla Cave, the “Jewel of the Underground” at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in 1986.
The cave quickly earned world-class status among caves, passing 50 miles of discovered length in four years, and 100 miles within the first decade of exploration.

If you have diabetes, selecting and preparing foods that are low in sugar, fat and sodium can be a real challenge.
The Los Alamos Cooperative Extension Service, in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program will offer a series of free cooking classes for people with diabetes.

Community Partnership Promotes 3-D Printing Education

A partnership with Los Alamos Public Schools, UNM-Los Alamos, Los Alamos National Laboratory Community Programs Office, LAPS Foundation and members of the community is moving quickly to develop a 3-D printing course at UNM-LA.
When ready, high school students will be able to take the course for a dual-credit. An adult course for community members also is under consideration.

The Los Alamos Teen Center is offering a grief support group at 3:30 p.m. today, March 14, in the upstairs area (Kelly Hall) of the building at 3900 Trinity Dr.
Candles will be provided for lighting to celebrate the life of Los Alamos High School student Isaac Hayden, 16, who died Tuesday night.

Los Alamos Magistrate Judge Pat Casados administered the Oath of Office Tuesday, March 12 to incoming school board members Jim Hall and Matt Williams.
