Letter To The Editor: Voting Yes On School Bond Just Makes Good Sense!
By ANDREA CUNNINGHAM
LAPS School Board
Have you ever had a chance encounter where a random conversation stays with you? I recently had that experience while traveling when I happened to sit near a chemistry professor from UNM’s Albuquerque Campus. After exchanging pleasantries, I happened to mention that I was from Los Alamos. His first reaction was, “They have great schools in Los Alamos! I pay $21,000 a year to send my child to (Albuquerque) Academy to get the same caliber of education that you guys get for free!”
That statement really sticks with me as I check “yes” on my ballot and proudly support Read More
Letter To The Editor: Wall Around New Mexico … False
By S.E. SMITHMuch as it pains me to defend Donald Trump, the statement (link) about building a wall around New Mexico has been proven false (search snopes.com for full details.)
Of course, if a wall were to be built around New Mexico, I would ask that Texas pay for it. 🙂
Letter To The Editor: UNM-LA Is A Great Community Asset
By TROY HUGHESPlease join me in voting yes and supporting our local college, UNM-LA. Los Alamos residents are intelligent, caring, and sharing people. As citizens we enjoy great community assets including our schools, roads, parks, trails, libraries, and other public amenities. At times directly, but most often indirectly through our elected officials, we as a community decide which of these amenities we desire and are willing to pay for through our local taxes.
As citizens we are tasked with directly deciding the fate of UNM-LA. We really have three choices: do nothing (not voting), Read More

U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich Letter To The Editor: Vote ‘For’ Bond To Continue Process To Upgrade School Facilities
By MORRIE PONGRATZOne of the frustrations during my years on the School Board was that all school district operational funds are allocated by the state on a per-pupil basis, regardless of local cost-of-living. Teachers are paid from the operational fund and it costs more to live in Los Alamos. We found that needed maintenance and utility costs for our aging facilities were robbing the operational fund of money that could go to staff salaries.
We formed a team to examine the difference between continuing to patch buildings with operational Read More
Sheehey: Support LA Public Schools And UNM-LA
By PETE SHEEHEYHaving hada scientific career in Los Alamos, I know I owe a lot to good public education. That’s one of the reasons I will vote Yes for the 2017 Los Alamos Public Schools Bond and the UNM-LA 1-mil levy. Both institutions have solid records of getting maximum value for taxpayers’ dollars. These two funding sources will allow them to continue their important contributions to our community.
The LAPS Bond will not increase our property taxes. It will continue the Schools’ strategic funding plan approved by voters in 2009 and 2013. This stage of the plan will Read More

New Mexico Gov. Susana MartinezLetter To The Editor: Dispelling Subtle Lie And Scaremonger Tactics
By TERRY GOLDMANNo, Brady Burke does NOT pay enough in taxes. (link)
Compared to most of New Mexico, Los Alamos County property tax rates are low; compared to most of the developed part of the country, our rate is absurdly low. I once looked into the big LA rate, which was about five times ours, if I recall correctly.

Los Alamos
Yesterday’s letter (link) in the Los Alamos Daily Post concerning dog attacks brought back memories. Almost 14 years ago when my youngest daughter was a newborn, I remember sitting through a Los Alamos Animal Control Task Force meeting with her on my lap while my fellow citizens screamed at each other. Dog owners insisted they had the right to allow their pets to run free as God intended while those advocating common sense restrictions on this “right” disagreed.
An exchange involving two ladies sitting behind me became practically

While improvement arrives too late to make up for inadequate performance evaluations of the last two years, the National Nuclear Security Administration scored Los Alamos National Laboratory higher on the whole this year, with six out of six ratings of “good” or better.
The lowest marks came in the highest weighted category, which was operations and infrastructure. The previous year’s low-mark of 49 (out of 100) percent in operations Read More

Letter To The Editor: Vote NO To Doubling A Property Tax
By BRADY BURKEIt’s true. You are being asked to double one of your property taxes. Your property taxes are made up of lots of individual tax burdens.
This whole LAPS Bond issue has been focusing on how there will not be a Tax Rate increase. Just look at the front page of Thursday’s Los Alamos Daily Post, first article (link) on the Front Page, continues onto Page 8; LAPS: No Tax Rate Increase. Only one line buried in a paragraph says that LAPS Bond is one of two items on the ballot.
The second item on the ballot is the Property Tax Poison Pill. It is the UNM-LA Read More
