Letter To The Editor: Sharon Stover Supports Youth?

By TESS LIGHT
Los Alamos

I’ve been heartened this past week to see no fewer than three ads in which Sharon Stover has focused her campaign for state office on the well-being of NM children. What a great cause to embrace. I’m a bit perplexed, however — does Ms. Stover intend to be an advocate for all NM children, or only the straight ones?

I ask because as County Clerk, she moved to deny marriage licenses to same sex couples. (For background, see The LA Monitor, Aug. 31, 2013 or The ABQ Journal, Sept. 4, 2013.) Her prior actions could only be called hurtful to LGBT children, not Read More

League Of Women Voters Endorses Constitutional Amendment One 2016 – Bail Bond Reform

By Dr. Meredith R. Machen, President
League of Women Voters of New Mexico

New Mexicans have the opportunity to make badlyneededchanges in the state’s antiquated bail bond system—-a system dating back to Pennsylvania state laws from the 1700s.

In short, the amendment would give judges the power to keep dangerous, violent offenders in jail and the discretion to release poor non-violent offenders. In other words, release decisions would be based on criminal history, community threat and flight risk, not on ability to pay for a “get out jail” card.

Letter To The Editor: Tough Decisions But Rep. Garcia Richard Is Audacious, Courageous And Smart

By JAMES L. NESMITH
Los Alamos

This is one of the most bizarre elections this nation has ever witnessed. Some decisions as to which candidate to support are amazingly easy, black and white, night and day. For others though, where both candidates are strong, have a history of public service and accomplishment, consistently represent their communities effectively and are held in high regard by their constituents and other community leaders, that decision can be agonizingly difficult.

This is the situation we face with the race for the 43rd State Legislative District. On the one hand we Read More

I thank you, the “Voters” of NM House of Representatives District 43, for allowing me to share my thoughts concerning the candidacy of Sharon Stover. I am Douglas R. Letter To The Editor: Donald Trump Is Unfit To Be President

JAMES FISHER
Trinidad, Colo.

We have the opportunity to win equal pay, higher wages and fair scheduling for workers.

Trump has a history of not paying workers he employs. He outsources jobs at his own companies. He says not paying taxes makes him smart. We can’t risk a Trump presidency.

Thank you.
