An Open Book: Cerro Grande Fire And Today
By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos
How is one to honor an event that marked one generation amid another event that will be equally sealed in the memory of the next generation? Maybe, it is to remember that while time does not heal all wounds, it is also true that painful memories gain, in time, the blessing of distance and perspective. As the Cerro Grande Fire was a defining moment in my life in Los Alamos, now, twenty-five years later, we look back and remember and learn, so let us hope that the same will be for our children who see, in these times, their own defining crisis.
Unlike many friends, our loss in Read More

These are mysterious times in American politics. Context is uncertain. Assorted views, including my own, see ways that newscasts could be more helpful. As generations pass, the manner of “news” on the airwaves has changed more than many may know and others have largely forgotten.
This last month, a new play on this timely topic opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. The play’s very title — “Good Night, and Good Luck” — has a proud history. In 2005, the five words were the title of a movie

By The Honorable Elizabeth K. Allen, Municipal Judge,
The Honorable Catherine E. Taylor, Magistrate Judge
We are hosting an Open Court House 10-11 a.m., May 1 in celebration of Law Day 2025. This year’s theme is E Pluribus Unum, a thirteen-letter Latin phrase meaning “Out of many, one”. It is more than just a motto—it is a powerful expression of unity and identity in American history. Originally proposed for the Great Seal of the United States in 1776, the phrase reflects the founding fathers’ vision of a single nation formed from a collection of diverse states and peoples.

Los Alamos Parent
Since the dawn of humanity, all parents have shared the same experience—watching their children grow into raging balls of hormones as they enter adolescence—and all parents respond the same way—doing the best they can to guide them through it. In the past, there was the village. Generations lived under one roof with extended family biologically hardwired to step in and help.
Today, many of us live far from family in neighborhoods where everyone’s busy, help is a luxury, and community is aspirational. If we’re lucky, we find trusted friends. If not, we rely Read More
