Letter to the Editor: NO! to the Mil Tax Increase
By BRADY BURKEEvery year, one organization or another posts the day of the year that we all work to just to pay our taxes. With the proposed Mil Tax, property owners can add another two days of work to that date to pay the Mil Tax increase. That’s two days you work and pay taxes on that income, just to send the rest to your local government in the form of another tax. I, for one, am tired of government organizations overspending and otherwise mismanaging their monies and then putting their hand in my pocket to make up for it.
The University of New Mexico has many channels for raising money. They Read More

By JIM KALOGEROS-CHATTAN
Los Alamos
Ms. (Sharon) Stover, (Los Alamos County Clerk)
In light of the decisions, following legal review and judges orders, of the County Clerks of Doña Ana, Santa Fe, Bernalillo, San Miguel, Valencia and Taos counties to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, will you, as Los Alamos County Clerk, commit to do the same?
State District Judge Alan Malott has ruled that New Mexico’s constitution prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, going on to say that same sex marriage is legal.
While the argument that it is up to the legislature, Read More
Letter to the Editor: Support a Community Treasure
By ROBYN SCHULTZ, ChairThe Democratic Party of Los Alamos County joins Chairman Gibson and other local Republicans in support of the UNM-LA Mil Levy.
When I graduated from high school in upstate New York, I chose to attend the local community college for my first two years. Classmates came back from their far flung institutions with exciting tales of huge lecture halls and the anonymity of being at a large school. More than a few returned prematurely from their college experiences, not yet ready for such dramatic changes.
In contrast, my experience was one Read More
Letter to the Editor: Look at UNM-LA Tax Proposal on Its Own Merits
By ROBERT GIBSON, Chair,Los Alamos voters have a rare opportunity to consider a tax increase proposal that actually has sound justification, the UNM-LA mil levy increase.
No community owes more to education nor values it more highly than ours. UNM-LA is an important local educational resource. It does its job well. Its graduation and job placement rates far exceed state averages.
UNM-LA’s operating mil levy has not increased since its founding 30 years ago. Alone, that is not a valid argument for the proposed hike. Their revenue from the existing levy has increased Read More

Letter to the Editor: Vote FOR UNM-LA. It’s Important!
By Chris ChandlerI guess I jumped the gun…
Last week I started checking the mail for my ballot. I quizzed my husband about it, thinking that he had accidently misplaced it. Voting to support the UNM-LA mil levy is important, and I sure didn’t want to miss my chance. So I contacted the County Clerk. The ballots will be out this week, the week of Aug. 26. I’m glad that I called … better to be safe than sorry.

As a middle school teacher excited about the beautiful new building we will soon be moving into, I attended the special board meet last Friday, Aug. 23. More than that, however, as a Jew, I want to thank the board for acknowledging the date of our High Holiday, Yom Kippur, and that it coincides with Read More

Letter to the Editor: UNM-LA Has Huge Impact on Local Education
By Pete Sheehey
Los Alamos County Councilor
UNM-LA has a huge positive impact on local education, starting with many of our high school students; our 16-year-old has been learning robotics there. Local entrepreneur William Sellers has argued that Los Alamos does not need “our own little private university.”
But let’s look in detail at what UNM-LA actually does (losalamos.unm.edu, or ourcommunityourcollege.com). It doesn’t pretend to be a self-contained university. It offers classes to: young people, to help them get their education started conveniently Read More
