Daily Postcard: A rare Wilson’s Snipe showed up this week at Overlook Park in White Rock. Wilson’s Snipe spend summers from Colorado to the Arctic Circle, then winter from Bosque del Apache NWR all the way south to Ecuador. But this week, several birders in Los Alamos and from across northern New Mexico enjoyed four of those migrants at the ball fields in Overlook Park. Foraging by driving their long beaks into moist ground like the needle on a sewing machine, these birds prefer marshes rather than the alpine forests and dry canyons of the Jemez. County Environmental Services Department Closed For Quarterly Employee Training And Certification  

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County Environmental Services Department is closed today, Oct. 23, for employee development, safety training, and certification compliance.

This includes operations at the Eco Station and the Overlook Convenience Center.

Residential service will not be impacted; however, commercial trash and recycling collection service will also be suspended today.

Commercial collection and all other services will resume Thursday, Oct. 24.

In less than a year we had two deer killed and either dying in our front yard or in the neighbors’ side yard.  Both were struck by vehicles on Canyon Road by the Green Zone in Los Alamos.

Why is it people continue to speed down Canyon Road when the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour?

Why is it the police cannot patrol this section of Canyon Road where the deer cross from the forest area to the north to graze on the Green Zone?

White Rock And LANL Power Restored Following 4 Hour Norton Transmission Line Issue

COUNTY News:

All power has been restored to electric customers after an outage affected White Rock and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) due to an issue with the Norton transmission line.

The outage began at 9:25 p.m. Sunday. The Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) reenergized the transmission line around 1:30 a.m. today, which resolved the outage.

The Norton Transmission line is one of two electric transmission lines that feed Los Alamos County and LANL. Read More
