WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, U.S. Representatives Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) and Young Kim (Calif.-40) introduced the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) Wildland Fire Communications and Information Dissemination Act (H.R. 369) to boost communications and information sharing efforts between first responders, fire management response officials and community members during wildfires.

County: Water Main Break On Connie Avenue In White Rock
Residents on Connie Avenue may experience low water pressure due to a water main break in the neighborhood.
Traffic will be closed to through traffic from Cheryl to Aragon Street while Gas, Water & Sewer crews from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) repair the break.
It is unknown at this time how long the repairs will take to complete, but it may be up to eight hours. Read More

Pajarito opens this Saturday, Jan. 21.
With more than two feet of snow over the past week, Mother Nature finally showed up, and the mountain conditions are incredible. The mountain will be open Saturday and Sunday and Friday-Sunday next week.
Officials will be evaluating options for opening more during the week in the coming days.
The mountain operations team has worked tirelessly to get the slopes ready, and have been hiring as quickly as possible to become fully staffed this season. Read More

The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club will be collecting and buying aluminum cans Saturday, Jan. 21, to be sent for recycling. The collection location is the parking lot of the First United Methodist Church on Diamond Drive (near Sullivan Field). Los Alamos County Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Moves To Monthly Schedule
Los Alamos County’s Environmental Services Manager Angelica Gurule announced today a change to the household hazardous waste program.
The existing weekly drop off schedule will move to a monthly schedule, with new hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning Feb. 3.
Residents who already pay for curbside collection can drop off household hazardous materials once a month at the Eco Station at 3701 East Jemez Road.

Purgatory Gets 78 Inches Of Snow This Month

PURGATORY News:
With 78 inches of snowfall so far this month and more on the way, this January at Purgatory has been one of the snowiest in recent memory.
Overnight, Purgatory received an additional 10 inches of snow, bringing the total accumulation from this week’s storms to 21 inches and it’s still snowing. Purgatory has received 149 inches of snow this season and the mountain is 100 percent open with skiing and riding on 105 trails.

NPS: Valles Caldera National Preserve Introduces Online Reservations For Backcountry Vehicle Passes
JEMEZ SPRINGS — In an on-going effort to improve recreational access and opportunities, the National Park Service (NPS) will begin offering backcountry vehicle passes, Feb. 15 at Valles Caldera National Preserve by online reservation, instead of on a first come, first served basis.
In conjunction, the park also will extend the distance that visitors can drive into the park without a backcountry vehicle pass.
Currently, 35 backcountry vehicle passes are available daily during the 6-month summer season (May 15 to Nov. 15). With this change, passes will be released for reservation Read More
