As the year wraps up, Los Luceros Historic Site in Alcalde, New Mexico, hosts a variety of activities for visitors.
The Sandhill cranes have migrated for the season to Los Luceros Historic Site! Visitors can see them during one of the many programs this November and December. Dawn ‘Til Dusk days offer free admission to New Mexico residents and children 16 and younger. Ranger Walk ‘N Talk tours are included with admission of $7 for adults and free to children 16 and younger. Admission is free to NM seniors on Wednesdays.

JEMEZ SPRINGS — National Park Service (NPS) fire staff from the Pueblo Parks Fire Group are planning to begin winter pile burning operations within the South Mountain, San Antonio, and Cerro Pinyon project areas of Valles Caldera National Preserve beginning on or around Nov. 3.
Burning activities will continue throughout the winter months as weather and fuel conditions allow, and ignitions will occur only when adequate snow cover or moisture is present to ensure safe and effective operations.

CLOVIS — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) has selected EPCOR to connect approximately 100 private well owners in rural Curry County to clean drinking water, protecting families exposed to toxic PFAS contamination from nearby Cannon Air Force Base.
The $12 million project, funded through a 2025 legislative appropriation, will extend EPCOR’s existing water system east of the base, where a four-mile contamination plume extends from use of PFAS-laden firefighting foams.

NMED: Toxic Algae Detected In Quemado Lake

CATRON COUNTY — The New Mexico Environment Department is warning visitors to avoid water contact at Quemado Lake after samples confirmed the presence of harmful algae and toxins.
Harmful algae blooms, or HABs, occur when certain algae grow excessively in water, posing potential health risks to people and animals. HABs can appear blue, bright green, brown or red and may resemble scum or floating grass clippings on the water’s surface. These blooms can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals.
