The sheepherders in the Valles Caldera carved a variety images on aspen trees in addition to carving letters.
One type of image involved stars. The five-pointed star can be found as shown in Picture 1. The carving of stars can become more complex. Picture 2 shows a star with eight points and curves. It is a more artistic compared to the five straight lines of the traditional star.
Picture 3 gives a hint going back to Spanish colonialism and religious intolerance. The Spanish king in 1492 required all Spanish people to be Catholic or face the Inquisition.

Bandelier To Begin Pile Burning As Conditions Allow

With favorable conditions for pile and prescribed burning present, the fire crew at Bandelier National Monument is planning to burn up to 172 acres of piled fuel materials along N.M. 4 throughout Bandelier.
This prescribed burn may begin as early as Feb. 19 and will continue through the winter months as conditions allow. A few days of ignitions are expected.

SFNF Waives Recreation Fees For Presidents’ Day; Offices Closed Feb. 17
SFNF News:
SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) will waive fees at many day-use recreation sites and amenities Monday, Feb. 17, 2020, to celebrate Presidents’ Day.
All SFNF offices will be closed Feb. 17 for the federal holiday, resuming regular business hours Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Fees will be waived at SFNF sites that normally charge a day-use fee and campgrounds that are not on the recreation.gov system.
