State Takes Enforcement Action Against Cannon Air Force Base For Discharging Without Permit

NMED News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) today issued an administrative compliance order to the United States Air Force for ongoing violations of state law related to the protection of groundwater resources.

The administrative compliance order seeks immediate compliance with groundwater discharge permitting requirements and assesses a civil penalty of $1,699,872.60.

In 2018, the state began protecting groundwater resources from three per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals, a group of manmade chemicals known to cause adverse health effects. Read More

Deforestation is changing the way monkeys communicate in their natural habitat, according to a new study.

This study, led by an anthropologist at the University of Waterloo, offers the first evidence in animal communication scholarship of differences in vocal behaviors in response to different types of forest edge areas.

SFNF Cuba District Plans Prescribed Pile Burns

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Cuba Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to implement the Ojitos and Poso/Sanchez prescribed pile burns sometime between Jan. 13 and March 31.

The timing will be dependent on favorable conditions, including snow pack, fuel moisture levels, air quality, wind direction and weather forecasts.

The pile burns are designed to remove woody debris from fuels reduction project areas.
