Zero Waste: New Ideas For Thanksgiving Leftovers

It happens every year: Thanksgiving sandwiches the day after the big event. Turkey soup. Dry mashed potatoes. Tired of the same old leftovers? Try some new recipes to re-use leftover Thanksgiving dinner: Empanadas (hand pies) and Shepherd’s Pie!

Empanadas

  • 2 pie doughs or puffed pastry, store bought or homemade
  • Small bowl with water
  • Melted butter or 1 egg beaten with 1tablespoon water
  • Filling ideas: warmed leftovers such as turkey, mashed potatoes and/or sweet potatoes, any leftover vegetables, dressing/stuffing, gravy, and cranberry sauce.

Bandelier, Valles Caldera May Begin Pile Burns Sunday

With the arrival of snow providing favorable conditions for pile and prescribed burning, fire crews at Bandelier National Monument and the Valles Caldera National Preserve are planning to burn up to 300 acres of piled fuel materials along N.M. 4 throughout Bandelier and on South Mountain in the Valles Caldera.
 
These burns will begin as early as Dec. 1 and continue through the winter months as conditions allow. 
 
The parameters for implementing a prescribed burn are based upon specific assessments, agency guidelines and safety protocols.

The weather is forecast to be unseasonably cold this week. High temperatures just in the 30’s and lows below freezing for several days are what’s coming.
 
At temperatures like this, it won’t be long before some of the lakes in Northern New Mexico start to freeze.
 
Smaller lakes at high elevations like the Canjilon Lakes, Trout Lakes, Lagunitas Lakes and Hopewell Lake are likely already frozen over and will soon be inaccessible due to snow.

SFNF May Implement La Presa Prescribed Burn

SFNF News:

SANTA FE Fire crews on the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) may begin blacklining the perimeter of the previously announced La Presa prescribed fire on Mesa los Indios near Forest Road 473 as early as Dec. 2.
 
The decision to proceed will depend on favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and forecasted weather.

BLM Now Issuing Personal Christmas Tree Permits

BLM News:
 
SANTA FE The Bureau of Land Management offices in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Socorro, Taos and Farmington began Monday issuing personal Christmas tree permits for harvest on BLM lands.
 
The permits will be sold through Dec. 24 and cost $5.
 
Maps may be obtained when purchasing the permits at a local BLM office. When transporting a tree taken from BLM public land, the permit must be attached to the tree.
 
Only piñon and juniper trees are available for harvest as Christmas trees on BLM lands.

Strong Wind Blows Structure Into Street Today

The homeowners heard a loud bang during the strong winds today and found this structure standing on all four legs in the middle of Hacienda Drive in White Rock. A couple of neighbors moved it to within the owners property and laid it on its side and removed the top to keep it from blowing away. SFNF: Coyote Ranger District Reports Rash Of Fires

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are concerned about a rash of fires that posed a potential threat to homes in the wildland urban interface (WUI).

The cause of the fires is under investigation.

Since Oct. 31, firefighters have responded to three fires on the Coyote District:

  • The 96 Fire near NM State Road 96, which occurred in a pile of woody debris from previous fuels reduction work;

County Releases Winter Sidewalk Clearing Guidelines

COUNTY News:

During the winter months, Los Alamos County would like to remind residents that it is important to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice so that they remain pass­able for postal workers, children walking to school and others who need to use them.

When possible, and depend­ing upon available resources, County crews will conduct sidewalk-clearing operations by removing snow first from the adopted “safe routes to school” and then move to other selected sidewalks.

The County does not clear every sidewalk due to limited resources.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The oldest and thickest Arctic sea ice is disappearing twice as fast as ice in the rest of the Arctic Ocean, according to new research.
 
A new study in AGU’s journal Geophysical Research Letters finds ice in the Arctic Ocean north of Greenland is more mobile than previously thought, as ocean currents and atmospheric winds are likely transporting the old, thick ice found there to other parts of the Arctic.
