NMED Seeks Information About Illegal Dumping

PICURIS PUEBLO — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) needs the public’s help in reporting and identifying illegal dumping into water bodies.
 
Last week, Picuris Pueblo found evidence of raw sewage in the Rio Pueblo, including toilet paper and other solids.
 
Within an hour, the Pueblo restricted access to the river as a precautionary measure. After the Pueblo contacted NMED, Surface Water Quality Bureau and Pueblo staff jointly sampled the river at the Pueblo and several miles downstream.

SFNF: Cueva Fire Meets Objectives, Reduces Fuel Loads

SFNF News:
 
SANTA FE After successful aerial ignitions Friday, low-intensity fire continued to burn through concentrations of fuel on the Cueva Fire on the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) over the weekend.
 
As woody debris and other fuels within the planning area are consumed, the Cueva Fire is producing less smoke with low to moderate smoke impact expected as the burn area continues to cool.

SFNF: Managers Plan More Activity On Cueva Fire

SANTA FE – A drying trend and increase in fire behavior have given fire managers on the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) an opportunity to add additional acres to the Cueva Fire by using aerial ignitions to consume unburned fuels within the planning unit.

Crews from New Mexico State Forestry will continue to work on securing the fire perimeter.

Forest Stewards Youth Corps Fall 2019: Fire And Fuels Program Kick-Off

SANTA FE The Forest Stewards Guild’s Forest Stewards Youth Corps (FSYC) Fall Fire and Fuels program kicked-off the 2019 field season with a crew member training.
 
Sixteen FSYC crew members ages, 18 to 25, attended the three-day training Aug. 19-23, at Cottonwood Gulch Foundation’s basecamp in Thoreau, N.M. The two crews are now spend the following 11-weeks working on U.S Forest Service (USFS) lands and learning from USFS specialists.
