One of the signs of spring is the sound of flocks of sandhill cranes as they circle high in the sky above the Espanola Valley.
 
That sound was heard last week as flocks of cranes that had spent the winter at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge along the Rio Grande south of Socorro began their migration north to their breeding grounds north of the Arctic Circle in North America and Siberia. In Lobo Land, A Senator Sticks Up For Coyotes

If hunters, trappers and ranchers had an enemies list, state Sen. Jeff Steinborn might be at the top of it.
 
On Monday, Steinborn is sure to clash with livestock owners and many rural legislators who represent them.
 
He is to present his Senate Bill 76, which would outlaw contests staged to see who can kill the most coyotes. It has cleared one legislative committee and is on to another.

Pacheco Canyon Prescribed Burn Planned For Mid-March

SANTA FE  Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to take advantage of favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality, wind direction and weather forecasts, to initiate a prescribed burn in Pacheco Canyon on the Española Ranger District as early as Monday, March 18.  
 
Exact dates will be dependent on fuel conditions on site.
 
The 500-acre unit is adjacent to Forest Road (FR) 102, approximately six miles east of Tesuque Pueblo and three miles west of Ski Santa Fe.

Semi Truck Slides Off NM 4 Near White Rock

LAPD News:

Los Alamos and Santa Fe County police responded to the scene of a semi truck that slid off N.M. 4 this morning between the truck route and White Rock.

Cmdr. Oliver Morris told the Los Alamos Daily Post that no injuries were reported.

He explained that traffic flow was delayed while a large tow truck was called in to hook-up the semi and haul it away.

N.M. 4 is now clear and traffic is moving along at a normal pace. Read More
