NNSA News:Voices Of Los Alamos Targets Chromium Plume Safety
By BARBARA CALEFBecause the existence of a chromium plume in the regional aquifer below Sandia and Mortendad Canyons has been a source of concern for citizens of northern New Mexico, Voices of Los Alamos asked experts to discuss the problem at a Nov. 27 meeting.
Danny Katzman is the Technical Program Director for LANL’s chromium project and a hydrogeologist. Katzman began by saying that he was working on a way to explain the complicated technical project, putting together FAQs (frequently asked questions) for the DOE website. This is now posted here.

Winter Arrives At Pajarito Mountain!

It’s a snow day at Pajarito Mountain! The flakes started flying last night and continued into today.
The Los Alamos ski area has received 4 inches already, plus its mountain crew continues to make snow in preparation for opening day, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 16.
This week, the weather pattern changed and brought colder temperatures that produced prime snowmaking conditions at Pajarito. Crews are continuing to make snow day and night as they gear up for next week’s start of the season.

LANL FY2017 Hazardous Waste Facility Noncompliance Numbers Decline
By MAIRE O’NEILLLos Alamos National Laboratory had 25 noncompliance reports under its Hazardous Waste Facility Permit from the New Mexico Environment between Oct. 1, 2016 and Sept. 30, according to a report filed Nov. 28 with state.
The number is down from 100 instances in 2016 and 400 in 2015. The report also states that there were no releases from a permitted unit that could have posed a threat to human health or the environment.
