Country music star Dale Watson and his band the Lonestars from Austin, Texas perform at 7 p.m. at Ashley Pond Park.

Bandelier Law Enforcement Rangers Offer Reward For Information On Elk Poaching

Between the evening of Aug. 3 and morning of Aug. 4, an elk was poached within Bandelier National Monument. 
 
Evidence was collected at the scene and some parts of the poached elk were taken by the suspects. 
 
The incident occurred along N.M. 4 near milepost 44 near Cerro Grande. The elk was on the south side of the road. If you observed a vehicle stopped along the road during this time, Bandelier law enforcement rangers want to know about it.

Northern New Mexico National Forests Extend Application Deadline For SRS Funding To Aug. 14

SANTA FE  The Carson, Cibola and Santa Fe National Forests have extended the deadline to apply for funding under Title II of the Secure Rural Schools (SRS) and Community Self-Determination Act to Aug. 14, 2017. 
 
Up to $680,000 is available to tribal and local governments, small businesses, non-governmental organizations and Forest Service field units for ecosystems and land and water quality projects that benefit the three forests in Northern New Mexico.

Ben Ray Luján welcomed an announcement from the Department of the Interior (DOI) that Secretary Ryan Zinke intends to finalize the process to consider whether to accept the donation of 3,595 acres, known as the Rimrock Rose Ranch, that are adjacent to Sabinoso Wilderness in New Mexico to be included as part of the wilderness.

PEEC Provides Family-Friendly Backpacking Trip

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is hosting a guided, family-friendly backpacking trip Saturday, Aug. 26 and Sunday, Aug. 27 hiking up to five miles a day in the backcountry. This family backpacking adventure will last two days and one night.

Adults and families are invited to meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16 at the Los Alamos Nature Center for a short orientation.

For anyone who has ever wondered if the ladders leading up the cliffs in Bandelier National Monument are replaced regularly, the answer is yes. And the proof will be easily seen this fall, when the park maintenance and preservation crews will replace the long ladders leading up to Alcove House, as well as the shorter ones that provide access to the smaller caves in the cliffs. As might be expected, that means that the ladders will occasionally be closed during the work.

Santa Fe National Forest Declares Cow Fire Out

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest called the lightning-caused Cow Fire out at noon Monday.

The fire started July 18 in slash and dead and down timber within the burn scar of the 2000 Viveash Fire. Natural drainages and the rocky landscape helped fire crews contain the small fire to around seven acres. The Cow Fire also received a significant amount of monsoonal moisture.

Smoke should no longer be visible from the Cow Fire, which was about 6 miles northeast of the village of Pecos.

Logan Beary Needs Help Bulking Up For Winter

Young orphan Logan Beary came to Dr. Kathleen Ramsay to ensure he gains enough weight for winter. He will join Blue Beary as they learn how to become full grown bears before their release back into the wild. Logan Beary is perfectly healthy, but requires about $4,000 in food before he can be released later this year. The community is being asked to consider donating to Land of Enchantment Wildlife Foundation to help get Dr. Ramsay the food she needs to get these bears nice and fat before winter. For the past couple of weeks, a mama bear and her two cubs have been dumpster diving all of the trash cans near Urban Park, 41st Street in particular. They usually limit their carousing to the wee hours of the morning but there have been two incidents in the last week where they were still in the neighborhood when it became light.
