Smoke From Medio Fire May Increase As Burnouts Resume

Today, firefighters are working together to determine the best conditions, timing and location to bring the fire to the handline on the western side of the Medio Fire.
Smoke may become increasingly visible as firefighters attempt to resume these critical burnout operations.
Lightning sparked the Medio Fire Aug. 17 on the Rio en Medio Trail in the Española Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest, about 7 miles north of Santa Fe. The fire is burning dry mixed conifer, ponderosa pine and has consumed 3,453 acres and is 55 percent contained with 255 personnel on the job.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Law Offices of the Public Defender strongly supports the pro bono lawsuit filed Aug. 24 by local and international law firms on behalf of people incarcerated in state prisons.
The suit seeks to improve prison coronavirus safety measures as soon as possible to prevent further deaths of inmates and community spread. It does not seek monetary damages.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced Friday approximately $1.2 million in recent grant awards to eight tribal governments, including the Tesuque Pueblo, Jicarilla Apache Nation and Pueblo of Pojoaque.
These awards are part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act signed by President Donald J. Trump March 27, 2020.

Earlier this evening (Thursday), the Los Alamos School Board unanimously voted to have all five elementary schools transition to the hybrid learning model beginning Monday Sept. 21.
The hybrid model consists of students physically attending school two days a week and working remotely three days a week.
