Mental Health Awareness Month And Kognito Training
LAPS News:
Every year, May is recognized nationally as Mental Health Awareness Month.
The statistics are clear: approximately one in five children and adults in the U.S. will experience a mental health challenge every year, and the national rate of suicidal ideation in teens is on the rise.
Staff and students in the Los Alamos Public Schools have been strengthening the community’s network of support by taking part in a new training opportunity.
Three of the most effective ways that a community can increase support for mental health are to:

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) hosted an active shooter based full-scale exercise Saturday, May 18 at UNM-Los Alamos. Los Alamos Police, Fire, Emergency Management and Classic Air Medical all participated in preparing for and responding to an active shooter event. Kindergarten students from the Los Alamos Public Schools were treated to the annual Teddy Bear Clinic Friday at Los Alamos Medical Center. The program gives students a better understanding of the emergency services available to the community and to build confidence and familiarize them with how these services work. Kiwanis: Dr. Paul Daly Addresses Measles Outbreak
Dr. Paul Daly, a physician at Los Alamos National Laboratory speaks about the current status of measles in the U.S. during Tuesday’s Kiwanis Club’s meeting at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church. Dr. Daly reported so far this year there have been 704 cases of measles in the U.S. However, no cases have been reported in Los Alamos or elsewhere in the state. Measles, Daly said, is highly contagious to those who are not immune.The virus is spread through coughing or sneezing. Symptoms can include a high fever, conjunctivitis and a rash.
