By MARTIN LAWLER

Modern medicine saved my life, what about yours? From polio to COVID vaccines to surgery at a famous medical center to our local New Mexico hospital, I owe my life to medical researchers and doctors.

Europe used to be the genesis of modern medicine: Louis Pasteur invented pasteurization and vaccines, Marie Curie discovered x-rays. Then American scientist took over. Under the leadership of President Roosevelt, the National Institute of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation were created. Our government has funded important cancer, heart, and HIV research. By TYLER TAYLOR
Interfaith Coalition on Homelessness

Last June, dreamers from four Los Alamos houses of worship asked ourselves, “If we could interest 10 or more congregations and thought big, could we collectively actually help to reduce the very high levels of homelessness in Española, a community of neighbors only 15 miles away? As outsiders, with limited knowledge, who would we first need to learn from? Are there affective groups in the Valley we could partner with? Would they accept us?”

Now, after nine months, a groundswell of enthusiasm and hope has developed.

Skolnik: Shame On The Legislature

By RICHARD SKOLNIK
White Rock

As a lifelong Democrat who has worked on health matters for 40 years, I am appalled by the legislature’s failure (again!) to pass well-known, evidence-based measures to reduce alcohol consumption and increase the health workforce.

The Governor says that improving public safety and reducing interpersonal violence are two of her central concerns. The evidence is clear, however, that she won’t achieve this unless excess alcohol consumption is reduced through increased taxes, among other measures, since alcohol is so strongly associated with interpersonal Read More
