Flash Flood Watch In Effect Beginning 2 p.m. Today

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Watch for a portion of North and Central New Mexico.

Areas included in the watch are the Jemez Mountains, Santa Fe metro area, South Central Highlands, lower Chama River valley, Albuquerque metro area, Estancia Valley, Lower Rio Grande Valley, Northwest Highlands, Sandia/manzano Mountains, Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains above 9,500 feet, Southwest Mountains, West Central Highlands, west central mountains, West Central Plateau and west slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

  • 2 p.m. today through this evening.
  • An Upper level wave moving east out of Arizona will interact with Abundant moisture over New Mexico and produce scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms today. Locally heavy rainfall is possible over areas that have already seen very heavy rains that past couple weeks. Storms are expected to move slowly from south to north and have the potential to train repeatedly over the same areas. Rainfall rates may approach 2 inches per hour with the strongest storms.
  • Heavy rain over areas with saturated soils will exacerbate the potential for flash flooding. This includes many locations from the Continental Divide eastward across the Rio Grande Valley and the central mountain chain. Wildfire burn scars may see enhanced risk for flash flooding. Urban drainages may also be overwhelmed by torrential rainfall.
