Fort Selden Hosts ‘Summer Nights: A Night Of Folklore’

Fort Selden Historic Site (FSHS) will host “Summer Nights: A Night of Folklore” July 23, a family-friendly evening brimming with food, crafts, live music, and maybe even an appearance from La Llorona herself.

Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs for watching the sunset. FSHS has extended its hours to 9 p.m. for this event! 

Schedule of Events:

  • 4-7 p.m.: Kids Activities: Make Your Own Folktale Mask, I Spy Fairytales, and Storytelling; 
  • 4-6 p.m.: Ravens and Crows with Las Cruces Museums; 
  • 4:30-6:30 p.m.: Live Music with Derrick Lee and The Hard Road Trio; 
  • 6:30-7:30 p.m.: History of Urban Legends with Dr. Rhonda Dassand;  
  • 7:30-8:30 p.m.: La Llorona: The Wailing Woman, presented by Rosalia Pacheco and the New Mexico Humanities Council. 

WHERE: Fort Selden Historic Site, 1280 Fort Selden Road, Radium Springs. 

WHY: Watch the sun set behind the mountains and enjoy a family-friendly party, including crafts, storytelling, music, dancing, food, and a presented history of urban legends, all culminating in a visit from one of the most famous figures out of New Mexico folklore: La Llorona, the Wailing Woman.
