LAPSF News:

The Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation (LAPSF) announces the 2025 recipients of the Kristin Kosiewicz Substance Abuse Awareness Scholarship: Sophie Bathrick-Price, Samuel Carmer, JoyMei Lincoln, and Malaika Philip.

Now in its fourth year, the scholarship is awarded in memory of Kristin Kosiewicz, a 1993 graduate of Los Alamos High School who passed away on September 26, 2021. The scholarship’s purpose is to increase awareness of the dangers of accidental drug overdose which tragically took Kristin’s life.

Applicants for the scholarship were asked to write an essay describing: the negative impacts of substance abuse; the role gateway substances have in leading young people to become addicted; thoughts about how to better prepare young adults graduating from high school to avoid the dangers of accidental overdose; thoughts about harm reduction; personal knowledge they have that brings light to the issue of substance abuse; and ideas for increasing awareness as well as prevention strategies.

Kristin’s father and stepmother, Stan Kosiewicz and Amy Anderson, express deep gratitude for the support of family, friends, and the broader community, whose generous donations have made the continuation of the scholarship possible. The Foundation will accept donations to support the final year of the scholarship in 2026.

As in previous years, Stan and Amy were moved by the honesty, compassion, and insight reflected in all of the submitted essays. Many students commented about the need to destigmatize people with drug issues and treat them with more compassion. “We are grateful to have had the opportunity to raise awareness about accidental drug overdose,” said Stan. “Next year will be the final year for the scholarship. This has been a healing process for us, and we hope that shining a light on this issue will continue to make an impact and prevent other families from experiencing the tragic loss of a child.”

Congratulations to the four students who were selected as the recipients of the scholarship this year. Sophie Bathrick-Price received a $4,000 scholarship and will attend the University of New Mexico to study psychology. Samuel Carmer received a $2,000 scholarship and will attend New Mexico Tech and major in physics. JoyMei Lincoln received a $2,000 scholarship and will attend New Mexico State University with biology and criminal justice majors. Malaika Philip received a $2,000 scholarship and will attend the University of California Davis to study psychology.
