STATE News:

SANTA FE — Gov. Susana Martinez has appointed Republican Jim Smith of Tijeras to the Bernalillo County Commission, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Wayne Johnson, who stepped down to become New Mexico state auditor.

“Jim has a fine record of leadership and service as a teacher and legislator,” Martinez said Friday. “I know that his experience and dedication to public service will serve the people of Bernalillo County well.”

Smith has served in the New Mexico House of Representatives since 2011, representing House District 22. Before serving in the Legislature, Smith was a science teacher. He retired from East Mountain High School in Sandia Park in 2014 after 18 years as an educator.

“I’m grateful for the Governor’s confidence,” Smith said. “I’m looking forward to serving the people of Bernalillo County as a member of the Commission.”

To take office on the County Commission, Smith will step down from the Legislature. The Governor will appoint a replacement to the House of Representatives following recommendations from the county commissions of the counties in House District 22 (Bernalillo, Sandoval, and Santa Fe).
