U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) joined President Joe Biden at the White House last week for a ceremony commemorating the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Senator Heinrich played a key role in including language to stop illegal gun trafficking and define and increase penalties for straw purchasing.

“I was proud to be a part of the bipartisan group of senators who came together to find a meaningful path forward on policies that will fight crime, reduce gun violence and save lives,” Heinrich said.

“The recent Fourth of July mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois—and the mounting rates of deadly gun violence that communities all across our country are experiencing—only reinforce how urgently we must boost public safety, invest in mental health care, and keep more firearms out of the hands of those who would use them against themselves or against their communities,” Heinrich continued.

Heinrich added, “I am grateful to all of the New Mexicans who have raised their voices to demand action to reduce gun violence and protect our kids. I am confident that this new law will make a real difference in reducing gun violence—a difference that will be measured in lives saved.”

Heinrich was a member of the bipartisan group of senators, led by U.S. Senators Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), who negotiated the final bill.
