Heinrich Endorses Leo Jaramillo For Senate District 5

Senate Dist. 5 Candidate Leo Jaramillo

ALBUQUERQUE – Today, U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich announced additional endorsements of candidates running in Democratic primary elections across New Mexico – including Leo Jaramillo who is running against incumbent Sen. Richard Martinez in Senate District 5, which includes Los Alamos.

“It’s crucial to have strong state and local leaders representing our communities throughout New Mexico as we work through this pandemic and its social and economic impacts,” Heinrich said. “I believe together we can rebuild our economy and social safety nets with more equity, access and strength. In the midst of these uncertain times, I am grateful to have these community leaders stepping up, ready to help in this work and serve their communities.”

Heinrich issued the following statements on each of the additional, endorsed candidates:

Leo Jaramillo, New Mexico Senate District 5: “Leo Jaramillo is a long-time community leader, always willing to roll up his sleeves to do what’s right for the people he serves.  He’s energized and has a real understanding of the issues his neighbors face. His commitment to be part of the solution and fight for northern New Mexicans is what we need in our state legislature, especially as we work to overcome the public health and economic challenges this year has brought,” Heinrich said.

Brenda McKenna, New Mexico Senate District 9: “Brenda McKenna is a strong, thoughtful leader and a true champion for working families. I know she will work hard to ensure access to meaningful education, critical health care, and the jobs programs that will prepare our community for the years ahead.  Brenda’s experience in health care gives her important insight into the toll this current pandemic will have and how we recover from it,” Heinrich said.

Carrie Hamblen, New Mexico Senate District 38: “As I’ve worked with Carrie Hamblen for years, I’ve seen what a strong advocate she is for small businesses and a thriving local economy. She is also a real champion for the environment and public lands, and has worked alongside me to secure the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument designation and expand nearby wilderness areas.  And Carrie’s fully committed to supporting and honoring our diverse communities and empowering the next generation of leaders behind her. I know Carrie will always do what is right for the people she serves, not the monied interests already too engaged in Santa Fe. We need Carrie, now more than ever, to help us rebuild from this pandemic. Carrie is the best candidate to move her district, southern New Mexico, and the state forward,” Heinrich said.

Meredith Dixon, New Mexico House District 20: “I’ve worked with Meredith Dixon for years, and she is one of the hardest working and sharpest leaders in our state.  Meredith has a unique ability to get people working together for positive change. She will take on the hardest tasks, think through the most complicated issues, and find the solutions that matter most to the people she represents. Meredith is exactly the kind of leader we need right now,” Heinrich said.

AnJanette Brush, Taos County Commission 4: “AnJanette Brush knows first-hand the value of creating opportunities for our young people to grow and succeed, and the importance of protecting our unique lands. She’ll stand up for those who most need a chance, and she’s dedicated to preserving the places we love.  AnJanette is also the kind of natural collaborator we will need to rebuild a more resilient economy, rooted in our traditional Northern New Mexico values mixed with fresh ideas to guide us out of our current uncertain times,” Heinirich said.

These primary endorsements are in addition to the following, previously announced endorsements: Siah Correa Hemphill, NM Senate District 28; Pam Cordova, NM Senate District 30; Mimi Stewart, NM Senate District 17; Shannon Pinto, NM Senate District 3; Pete Campos, NM Senate District 8; Kristina Ortez, NM House District 42; Roger Montoya, NM House District 40; Matthew McQueen, NM House District 50; Craig Secatero, Socorro County Commission Seat 1; Janice Valera, San Miguel County Commission Seat 2; Harry Browne, Grant County Commission Seat 5.
